WEST BROM TEAM NEWS: Manager Bryan Robson made two changes to the side that won 2-1 at home to Arsenal last weekend. Darren Moore made his first Premiership start of the season to form a five man defence along side Curtis Davies and Neil Clement. Kanu dropped to the bench while last weeks match winner Darren Carter replaces Ronnie Wallwork in midfield as the Baggies go with a 3-5-2 formation.

BOLTON WANDERERS TEAM NEWS: Boss Sam Allardyce made six changes to the side that crafted out a brilliant 1-1 draw with Besiktas in midweek. Jaaskelainen, Pedersen, Davies, Giannakopolous and Nolan were all recalled whilst young Joey O’Brien made only his second start in a Wanderers shirt.

TWO LATE STRIKES FOR BOLTON LEAVES ALBION WANDERING AT THE REEBOK!!!

A late double from Hidetoshi Nakata and Kevin Nolan sent the Baggies crashing to yet another defeat on the road as Bolton deservedly grabbed maximum points on home soil. It could have been all different though if Diomansy Kamara’s penalty hadn’t been disallowed due to Geoff Horsfield encroaching. Kamara blazed the retaken effort over the bar and Albion were made to pay in the final stages of the game as Nakata broke the deadlock nine minutes from the end. Kevin Nolan made doubly sure in injury time when he fired home from just inside the box to give Wanderers their first win in three games.

Bolton began the brightest despite having played 90 minutes in Turkey on the Thursday evening. Neil Clement gifted a chance to Diouf when he completely miscued a headed clearance but luckily for Albion the Senegalese striker could only waste his effort by shooting wide. Wanderers were at it again just moments later as a sweeping move enabled Japanese midfielder Nakata to turn in a cross for the waiting Kevin Davies but his close range strike was superbly saved by the feet of Chris Kirkland as he continued his form from the Arsenal game.

Bryan Robson’s men were still under early pressure as this time Faye whipped in a deep cross for Stelios but the Greek winger headed inches wide of Kirkland’s left hand post. However, in the 19th minute Albion almost took the lead completely against the run of play as they were awarded their first penalty kick of the season after Kamara was fouled by Diouf. Kamara stepped up take the penalty himself and neatly tucked the ball into the back of the net but the joy was short-lived, the referee signalling that spot kick had to be retaken due to Horsfield encroaching inside the area. This time the Senegal forward went for the same place but blazed the ball over the bar to let Bolton off the hook.

Possession was soon back with Wanderers as they came close yet again to scoring when a terrible mix up in the Albion defence enabled Faye to head the ball across the goal deep inside the six yard box but somehow Nakata with an open net to slot into managed to blast his shot off his own player Stelios who was on the goal line and the ball deflected over the bar. The Baggies then had to be thankful for their goalkeeper Chris Kirkland as once again he performed heroics to tip the ball over the bar after Nolan had headed towards goal following a Stelios right wing cross.

Half Time:
Bolton Wanderers 0-0 West Brom

At the start of the second half Kamara came within inches of giving Albion the lead when he outstripped Ben Haim for pace down the left flank but from a tight angle the former Pompey man produced a disappointing finish as he shot wide with just Jaaskelainen to beat. At the other end Bruno N’Gotty stumbled at the vital moment after a curling Diouf corner had caused havoc in the Baggies backline.

Clement then totally miscued his clearance deep inside his own box which enabled Diouf to fire inches over the bar as Bolton continued to press for an opener. Albion then created their best chance of the game when Greening slipped in the lively Kamara who again used his pace to split the Wanderers rearguard but he could only blast his shot straight at the feet of Jaaskelainen who managed to deflect the ball behind for a corner.

Darren Moore then came to
Albion’s rescue as an excellent last ditch tackle prevented Stelios getting a clear sight on goal following a clever Diouf through ball. Bolton’s pressure finally paid off though when Nakata was presented with a free kick 20 yards out, the Japanese midfielder struck the set piece perfectly through a static West Brom wall and into the bottom corner of the net past the stranded Kirkland.

Albion substitute Kanu almost equalised a minute later but he failed to get anything on a header after Albrechtsen had knocked the ball back across the danger area for the Nigerian. With time running out the Baggies went for broke but only ended up conceding again as awful defending from Jonathan Greening enabled Nakata to slip the ball into the open space for Nolan who superbly curled the ball past the despairing dive of Kirkland and into the back of the net to seal the points for the Lancashire outfit.

MAN OF THE MATCH: Diomansy Kamara

PLAYER RATINGS OUT OF TEN

Kirkland 8 - Superb again, kept us in it on a few occasions. Is getting better and better each week.
Albrechtsen 6 - An average performance from Martin, worked hard but was sometimes caught out of position.
Davies 7 - Solid performance from Davies although I do think he can be too keen sometimes and that is something hopefully he will cut out as he twice got in his team mates way which almost cost us.
Clement 6 - Not the best from Clem as he made some poor clearances but that was probably not helped by the amount of pressure our defence was under.
Moore 6 - Strong in the air but as always lacks pace on the floor and was sometimes left exposed.
Robinson 6 - Average performance from Robbo, can play a lot better.
Greening 5 - Awful display from Greening, I don’t know what the matter is with him he is just absolutely shocking at the moment; cost us the second goal when he failed to keep possession.
Watson 6 - Another solid midfield performance from Watson, looks really good in his new position even though he lacked help from his other midfield colleagues.
Carter 5 - Never in the game from the first minute till the last, he was very poor, can play a lot better.
Kamara 8 - Superb display from Kamara, had Bolton tied in knots at times with his running and pace, the only player apart from Watson who chased and harried till the full time whistle went.
Horsfield 5 - Cost his own side a goal when he encroached inside the penalty area, was constantly offside and was never once an attacking threat to the Bolton defence.

Subs:
Kanu 5 - Hardly had a touch, but to be fair to him he did not look fit.
Earnshaw 5 - Little time to make an impact.

REF WATCH

Mike Dean 3 - Made some shocking decisions for both teams especially goal kicks and corners etc. Failed to let the game flow at times.

FAN WATCH

Albion 2 - Some of the worst Albion support I have known in my lifetime. Never sang once in full voice. It was abysmal! Although maybe it’s because most are sick of watching that garbage.
Bolton 4 - Wasn’t much better, but at least they got behind their side.

MY REVIEW

What an awful performance!! Back to square one again if you ask me. Ok so we may not be in the bottom three but it’s only a matter of time unless there is a dramatic change! We are simply awful and I have to say that this team we have got is not a shadow on the side that stayed up last season. Robson got it wrong again in my view, playing 3-5-2 was a massive mistake as it just gave Bolton far too much room to play in and they completely over run us in the midfield (which is not hard these days) and it’s just becoming a joke now because we are dreadful in every single department of the pitch. We can’t defend, we can’t attack and worst of all we can’t score! Yes we got two goals last week against Arsenal but come on, one of those was a wonder goal and I am getting sick and tired now of watching this rubbish week in week out, it’s the same every game. Robson does not pick a settled side and goes all defensive and we just let the opposition walk over us until they score! Look at last week, if it wasn’t for Kirkland it could easily have been 3 or 4-0 to Arsenal before we even got the equaliser.

Now I would understand if we were actually playing good football and creating lots of chances but we simply are not doing this. I cannot think of a Premiership game this season where we have played a team off the park for 90 minutes and created a load of chances. Portsmouth at home we were lucky and so was we against Arsenal at home, Sunderland I don’t know how on earth we got a point and there is only Manchester City I can think of where we have played possession football and deserved a result. The rest of the games you can forget it as we have been woeful. Like I say it is getting to a point now where if no immediate action is taken either in team selection or even trying to play attacking football just like West Ham, Wigan and Sunderland seem to be doing with weaker sides than us then we are going down no doubt about it!

One thing I find interesting though is Robson has a 12 month rolling contract, now from my understanding I believe it runs out sometime in November it will be interesting to see whether Mr Peace will keep him on or not. At the moment I would say no but if he produces the miracle he produced last season then we may turn it around but can you honestly see that happening? Prove me wrong Robson just like you did last season.

Bryan Robson:

"I haven't seen a replay but I suppose if the players were encroaching then Joe Kamara's first penalty had to be retaken. But the referee lost us the game because of the decision to give the free-kick which led to Bolton's first goal. Bolton hadn't threatened us at all in the second half after we withstood a lot of pressure in the first half. It is annoying as a manager when the players have played with a lot of discipline, were comfortable, and the referee then makes a bad decision. Martin read it really well and came from the side of the Bolton player to take the ball on his chest. It was a great challenge.”

"There was then a misunderstanding between Chris and Joe for their free-kick because Joe thought Chris was pushing him out of the wall when he was actually telling him to pull it across. That's cost us as well because the communication was poor.”

"We were very solid in the second half and never really looked like we were going to concede so it's disappointing when the game rests on a bad decision."

"I thought with that system, which was the way we finished against Arsenal, we looked strong and difficult to score against. We should have passed the ball better than we did but there were some encouraging things there."

Sam Allardyce:

"I'm absolutely delighted for the lads, who played, the lads who didn't play and the squad in total because it's all their commitment that is pushing this club forward into a season where it's never ventured before; playing in Europe and then competing in the Premiership. They got another victory. This one was well deserved. We nicked one at Manchester City which wasn't deserved."

"We had a little bit of luck at the right times, which is always very important. We had a great save at the right time from Jaaskelainen at 0-0. The penalty miss went in our favour even though I didn't think it was a penalty in the first place.”

"Our finishing was so lax in the first half I was getting worried at what we'd have to do to score a goal. We presented the players with four golden opportunities to score goals. They just had to beat the goalkeeper but nobody did. Finally, a bizarre one, which made me definitely think it wasn't going to go our way, was when Hide smacked it and hit Stelios on the head. But we persistently probed, broke them down and made them work very, very hard. In the end they cracked. The quality of chance-taking was excellent. Our two hardest chances were created into goals.”

"Concentration at the back was vital today and our defenders did their jobs correctly. Our quality of play going forward was excellent."
