ALBION
TEAM NEWS:
Albion manager
Bryan Robson made five changes as he opted for a 4-5-1 formation against
the champions. Zoltan Gera, Ronnie Wallwork, Geoff Horsfield, Kevin
Campbell & Steve Watson were all rested ahead of Saturday’s local derby at
home to Birmingham City. Their replacements were Diomansy Kamara who made
his full league debut alongside Riccardo Scimeca, Richard Chaplow, Martin
Albrechtsen and Kanu.
CHELSEA
TEAM NEWS:
Shaun Wright-Phillips and
Michael Essien made their full league debuts as boss Jose Mourinho made
six changes to the side that won 1-0 at home to Arsenal last weekend.
Didier Drogba replaced Hernan Crespo while Joe Cole and Glen Johnson came in
for Damian Duff and Paulo Ferreira. Dutch winger Arjen Robben was relegated
to the bench along with Petr Cech who was replaced by Carlo Cudicini in
goal.
EASY ‘FOUR’ CHELSEA AS CHAMPIONS SEND AWFUL ALBION CRASHING TO DEFEAT!!!
Frank
Lampard notched a brace as Chelsea ran out 4-0 winners at Stamford Bridge
to go top of the Premiership for the first time this season.
Albion had started well and looked they could contain the
champions, that was until Lampard broke the deadlock inside the half hour
mark. Following that goal the floodgates opened and Bryan Robson’s side
were never really in it as Joe Cole, Didier Drogba and Lampard again all
scored to give the Londoners an easy 3 points.
The
game began with the Baggies trying to frustrate the home side and it
worked to a certain extent as the visitors came closest to opening the
scoring when Paul Robinson swung over a left wing cross but just as
Greening was stealing in at the back post, Del Horno cleared the danger in
the nick of time. Chelsea did not create their first chance until the 21st
minute, Del Horno sent a curling left footed cross into the box which
Drogba could only head wide of Chris Kirkland’s left hand post.
Albion weren’t so lucky two minutes later when Neil Clement failed to
control a Thomas Gaardsoe pass. The mistake enabled Chelsea to hit the
Baggies on the break, Shaun Wright-Phillips picked up the loose ball and
fed Drogba down the right flank, he swung in a low cross which seemed to
evade everybody except the grateful Frank Lampard who made no mistake by
slamming the ball into the net past the onrushing Kirkland to give Chelsea
the lead. Minutes later, Mourinho’s men could have found themselves two up
as Gallas was able to glance a free header towards goal but luckily for
Albion goalkeeper Kirkland was there to make the save.
In
the 43rd minute though it was 2-0 as another mistake by the Baggies proved
costly when Paul Robinson failed to shepherd the ball out for a goal kick
and instead let the pacey Wright-Phillips nip in behind him and cross for
the waiting Joe Cole to stab home into the empty net.
Half Time: Chelsea 2-0 Albion
In
the second half
Chelsea were still looking the most likely to score and add to their
tally, Joe Cole was able to pounce on a mix-up between Greening
and Chaplow
to deliver a sweet right footed cross which went fizzing across the face
of the goal just evading the sliding Drogba to Albion’s relief as he
looked set to tap into an empty net. Drogba then came close again, this
time bulleting a header towards the top corner of the goal from a Lampard
cross, somehow Baggies keeper Kirkland pulled off a remarkable save to
deny him.
Chelsea continued to pile on the pressure as the dangerous Wright-Phillips
twisted and turned Robinson inside out before teeing up Michael Essien who
looked set to notch on his full debut, but once again Kirkland was there
to this time block with his legs before the rebound was cleared away by
Clement. Ex-Chelsea man Clement soon had to be on alert again though as
this time he deflected a Michael Essien shot over for a corner.
In
the 68th minute all of the Chelsea pressure finally paid off when Cole
sent over a corner which caused panic in the Baggies defence and Del Horno
was able to knock the ball back for Drogba to tap into an empty net.
Moments later, Bryan Robson made a change as he brought on new boy Nathan
Ellington for his Premiership debut replacing the tired Jonathan Greening.
The
substitution did little to help the Baggies fire power up front and only
encouraged the hosts in scoring again. Poor defending once more by
Albion led to the loose ball falling for
England midfielder Frank
Lampard who lashed home from just inside the box to complete the Chelsea
rout. The visitors had their first shot on goal in the 90th minute when
Diomansy Kamara tried his luck from a free kick but Carlo Cudicini in the
hosts goal saved it comfortably to end a miserable night for the
West Brom supporters.

PLAYER
RATINGS OUT OF TEN
Kirkland
6 - Could not fault him for any of the goals really, made a couple of good
saves to keep the scoreline down.
Albrechtsen 5 - Looked totally outclassed by Joe Cole, who ran rings
round him all night.
Gaardsoe 4 - An awful game for Tommy, was at fault for the first
goal and never looked comfortable.
Clement 5 - Not the best of games for Clem either but did save his
side with a few clearances.
Robinson 5 - Was at fault for the first goal and really struggled
up against Wright-Phillips.
Greening 5 - Didn’t really do much to be honest, there was no
creativity from him whatsoever.
Scimeca 5 - In the first half he battled really well up until the
first goal, but after that totally lost it.
Chaplow 6 - One of the bright sparks of the night, never gave
up battling and worked his socks off which is more than I can say for the
rest of them.
Johnson 4 - Simply not good enough at this level and it showed. As
much as he tries he just hasn’t got the quality.
Kamara 4 - Likes to dribble but into opposition defences, very poor
game and I hope that’s not the best he can play.
Kanu 5 - Couldn’t knock him for effort, but he too looked totally
outclassed by Terry and Carvalho.
SUBS:
Inamoto 5 - The game was dead and buried by the time he came on,
battled well but did not really get into the game.
Ellington 6 - Looked sharp when he came on and showed some nice
touches. Be nice to see him when he is 100 per cent fit.
REF WATCH
Mark Halsey 3 - Very
poor, the usual ‘BIG club ref’ always giving decisions to the home side.
FAN WATCH
Albion 7 -
Very good in the
first half, died down
a little bit when Chelsea went 2-0 up though. It still can be better.
Chelsea 4 -
Never sang
once until they scored the first goal. After
that it was dribs and drabs.
FINAL THOUGHTS
Well what can I say? It
really was a poor performance. I have to admit I think Robson got it
tactically wrong. As much as I can see what he was trying to do it was
never going to hold a team like Chelsea for 90 minutes. One thing I was
very surprised at was Andy Johnson playing in the centre of midfield, the
guy just isn’t good enough in my opinion and he looked miles out of his
depth last night against Lampard and co. Why we didn’t start with Inamoto I
just don’t understand, I mean the guy has been our best performer in
pre-season and he didn’t even look too bad against Man City so what has he
done wrong to lose his first team place?
All
round we were poor last night, we had nothing creative up front. Kanu
and Kamara never looked a threat going forward and to me it just looked like
we went to get a draw not a win which I think is ridiculous, ok you have
to be careful what you do against the big sides but at least put your best
side out! I mean that team we put out was nowhere near our best side. It’s
also frustrating to hear that Robson will do it again as well. We cannot
play the rotation game because we haven’t got the quality of players to do
that, simple as.
Anyway the games gone now and on Saturday we have another important game
at home to Birmingham City. Hopefully we will be playing our best side
against them and that will mean NO Andy Johnson. At least Zoltan Gera
and Geoff Horsfield will be fresh so we can get
right into them, but it’s going to be a tough game and we need to get all
3 points .
Dale Brookes

Big-hearted Frank Lampard
celebrated becoming a father by scoring twice as Chelsea went top of the
Barclays Premiership for the first time this season. The 27-year-old former West
Ham player, who is now just 10 games away from breaking England goalkeeper David
James's Premiership record of consecutive appearances, put Chelsea in front in
the 22nd minute his 149th straight league game. The England midfielder's wife
had given the couple a baby daughter early in the week and Lampard's goal, his
50th for the club, was hailed by a joyous 'cradle-rocking' celebration as
Chelsea easily overcame the limited resistance of Bryan Robson's
West Brom.
Lampard's goal lit-up a
rather pedestrian first half by Chelsea's standards, although by the time
the interval arrived, there were signs Albion were in for a difficult
second period. The England midfielder, who was told by doctors at the
start of the season that he possessed a larger than average heart, is
determined to break James's record. "I'm proud of it so far but it is not
the be all and end all," he admits. "I'd like to beat the record because
I'm so close. In modern football who knows how long it would last with
suspensions, injuries and resting. Obviously I'd like to beat it now." His
amazing stamina was again responsible for another high-octane performance
and the secret of his non-stop engine is a bigger heart than normal.
Lampard explains: "I was a bit worried at first. I didn't know whether it
was good or bad. But I've always liked to run and keep fit and the doctor
said maybe because I've got a big heart, it needs to work itself to
capacity."
While Lampard was in the process of covering every square-inch of the Stamford
Bridge turf, Albion were contriving to give Chelsea the lead. After giving the
ball away to Shaun Wright-Phillips, the omens looked distinctly poor for the
midlands club. Seconds later the ball was nestling in the corner of Chris
Kirkland's net - courtesy of Lampard's shot from six yards. The midfielder made
no mistake after the club's £24.4 million new signing Michael Essien had stepped
over Didier Drogba's cross to allow Lampard a clear shot at goal.
After a cagey start, Chelsea
began to find their attacking flair and in the 21st minute Asier Del Horno
crossed from the left-wing only for Drogba to miss the target from six yards.
However, a minute later and Chelsea were ahead through Lampard and was at the
heart of all Chelsea'
constant promptings as they looked for a second goal. In the 32nd minute, his
corner was met by the head of the towering William Gallas at the far post but
the French defender failed to provide the required power or direction to trouble
Kirkland unduly. But Chelsea were in full control as the half time whistle
approached with Lampard and Drogba a constant threat. Three minutes before the
interval, Chelsea's growing pressure paid off thanks to another error from
Albion. Wright-Phillips chased what appeared to be a lost cause on
the right flank but somehow Paul Robinson allowed the £21 million winger to
snatch the ball from him and pull it back for Joe Cole, making his first start
of the season, to fire home past the unprotected
Kirkland from eight yards.
The visitors were under the cosh for long periods of the second half as Chelsea
played the ball around with increasing swagger and authority. Kirkland made a
terrific one-handed save on the hour to deny
Chelsea
a third when Cole's cross was headed towards the left-hand corner of the net by
Drogba. But Kirkland managed to top the ball away only for Wright-Phillips to
return it into the danger area where Essien was prevented from notching on his
full debut by the bravery of Robinson who managed to block the ball with
Kirkland struggling behind him. Drogba put Chelsea three in front in the 67th
minute though when a corner on the left caused all kinds of confusion in the
Albion defence. Del Horno's cross into the six-yard box was turned into the net
by the outstretched foot of the Ivory Coast marksman. The magnificent Lampard
made it two on the night 10 minutes from time when he beat Kirkland for the
second time. Lampard benefited from the persistence of substitute Arjen Robben,
who had replaced Cole, and when the ball fell kindly for him eight yards out,
the England midfielder despatched a low right-foot volley into the net.
Sporting Life

Bryan Robson:"I didn't think Chelsea
caused us any problems. We caused our own problems. If you assess the
first-half performance, Chelsea didn't create one clear-cut chance but we
gave them two goals by poor play from us.”
"I thought our team
shape and the way we set about the game was good. We were frustrating
Chelsea but when you give two goals away like we did, it's going to be
hard for any team and when you're playing against a team like Chelsea, who
are an excellent defensive side, you have no chance of getting back into
the game. It made it really hard in the second half and
Chelsea
then played how we know they can when they have an advantage.”
"I didn't think we
would create too much against them, which is why it's disappointing to
give the type of goals away we did. If you open the game up, Chelsea are
great at defending the box and hitting you on the counter-attack."
"The timing of the
fixtures has been a bit harsh on us. Birmingham played Tuesday night
whereas we've played tonight and then have an early kick-off on Saturday.
So it's impossible for your players to recover and be 100 per cent to
perform on Saturday. I had that in mind but I still thought we could make
it really difficult for Chelsea to break us down. We broke ourselves down,
though, and that's why we ended up being beaten 4-0."

José Mourinho:
"Against
Arsenal was better than against Wigan and tonight was better than against
Arsenal, the team is playing with more confidence and playing better
football. I think we were the best team and we
had control of the game. We scored the second goal at a very good moment
just before the end of the first half. “
"I'm very
pleased with the three points, with the goals and the performance."

Nathan Ellington makes his Albion debut whilst
Diomansy Kamara makes his first start for the club.
