Evening Mail:

THE good guys always lose out don't they?

Sporting Lisbon delivered a fourth straight pre-season defeat to Bryan Robson's men - in a game Albion didn't even want to play.

The club only agreed to take part as a goodwill gesture to appease organisers who had insisted that the match went ahead, even though Robson had already planned his schedule around two matches --those ending in a 1-0 defeat to Sevilla and 5-0 loss to Benfica.

And how they must have wished they'd given last night's friendly in the popular holiday resort of Albufeira a miss, with little going Albion's way.

Although there has been a positive vibe around the Vilamoura training camp throughout their stay, the Baggies have not enjoyed the best of fortunes in the three matches during their eight day visit.

Last night was no exception, even though Albion looked far more promising during the early stages of the game playing an experimental 3-2-4-1 system before substitutions ruined their second-half flow.

Liedson opened the scoring on 23 minutes with a headed goal, before Carlos Martins drilled in a 56th-minute free-kick.

Riccardo Scimeca gave the few visiting fans hope when he nodded in Darren Carter's 79th-minute cross.

But the Portuguese giants made sure of the win when Martins grabbed his second of the night after Carter tripped Silva to concede a penalty in the 86th minute.

Albion's night went from bad to worse when Neil Clement was given a straight red card for a clumsy challenge on Moutinho in the dying minutes.
