BLUES striker Fowler played the full match as
Manchester City's reserve
team drew 1-1 with West Brom.
Fowler's absence from City's recent second-string outings has
led to suggestions his time with the Eastlands outfit is coming to an end.
Ipswich and Portsmouth have
both been linked with the former
England
striker in recent days, although club officials have backed the view of
manager Stuart Pearce that Fowler, whose lucrative contract expires in the
summer, still has a future at the club.
And, after making his second senior appearance of the season
as a substitute in Saturday's 4-1 win over
Birmingham, the 30-year-old
was selected for the match at the Regional Athletics Arena.
It was not Fowler's most productive night, however, and he
drew a blank, with City's goal coming from Lee Croft 14 minutes from time,
to cancel out an early strike from Rob Elvins.
Fowler was hacked down in the second half by
West Brom's Rob Davies, who
picked up a yellow card for the mistimed challenge.
Dutch winger Kiki Musampa, who has fallen out of favour in
recent weeks, played for 75 minutes before being replaced by Michael
Johnson.
The visitors named a strong side, with
England squad goalkeeper
Chris Kirkland included after a recent bruised kidney injury, while Darren
Moore, Thomas Gaardsoe and Andy Johnson also appeared.
Gary Shelton: "Rob was distraught after the game, it would probably have won the game for us but it was just one of those things." "I was much more pleased with the performance after what has happened with our defending and goals against tally in recent weeks, the attitude and application of everyone was excellent. Jonno worked his socks off and, considering it was his first game for a while, his fitness looked quite good." "We played particularly well in the first half and created another three excellent chances, with Brian Smikle being denied twice by his namesake in the City goal, Kasper Schmeichel. We didn't pass it as well in the second half which saw us struggle to get out of our own half at times. Bradley Wright-Phillips and Robbie Fowler caused us a few problems, and Kirky made some good saves, but in the end City's pressure told.” "Rob obviously had a great chance to win it for us but even if we'd lost again it wouldn't have been the end of the world because the lads put everything into it." Steve Wigley :“We’ve played well. In the first half we were trying to be too precise, we were trying to get to the byline to cross the ball, and when we put one in early in the second half we’ve scored a goal.” “To be fair Ishmael’s tormented the boy in the first half and was just caught in between putting the ball across or heading for goal himself a couple of times. I said to him at half time to get it out of his feet and whip one in - he’s done that - Bradley’s just missed it and Crofty’s scored.” “Overall, I think we should have probably won the game, but we didn’t!” Source: mcfc.co.uk |
