Evening Mail:
ALBION clocked up their first success of the season as they punished poor
defending by Glenn Hoddle's second string at Molineux. The
Baggies, who had banked just one point from their previous three outings,
opened the scoring after a 35th-minute blunder by Jody Craddock. The
defender, back in action after a calf strain, failed to control a through
ball from Ibraham Sissoko.
Striker Stuart Nicholson pounced immediately as he charged in to fire a
rising shot past the helpless Stefan Postma. It
was 2-0 in the 54th minute when Rob Davies slipped past Craddock before
converting an angled drive that should have been swept away by Postma.
Wolves had their chances but continually failed in front of goal with
striker George Ndah ballooning an early effort high and firing another
good chance wide. The
home side made the scoreline respectable in the 71st minute when Patrick
Flynn made no mistake at close range. Gary Shelton: "It was an excellent performance. In the first half, the pace of Stuart Nicholson and Brian Smikle up front created quite a few half chances, although they had their fair share and Russell Hoult had to pull off a couple of good saves. We didn't start the second half particularly well and we probably scored our second against the run of play. We looked comfortable until they pulled a goal back and we had to defend really well during the final 15 minutes or so but I was really pleased with the performance and it's always nice to get the first win in the bag.” "We had a young side out and although we didn't keep the ball as well in the second half as we did in the first, the work-rate was fantastic."
