A dull game with very few chances for either side. Only Lloyd Dyer, Brian Smikle and Richard Chaplow put in
good performances for Albion. In the end a draw was a fair result, Albion
being strongest during the first half whilst City were the better side in
the second.

Evening Mail:
ALBION reserves deserved this hard-earned point from an opening game at
the Hawthorns which seldom reached great heights. While
both sides offered some neat approach work, they lacked the cutting edge
that will surely arrive later in the season.
However, City's second-half equaliser was stunning after the Baggies had
taken a 36th-minute lead through Diamansy Kamara's penalty.
Albion had several firstteam squad on view and one of them, young striker
Rob Elvins, almost drew first blood in the sixth minute from Kamara's
pass. However, the shot was deflected by Nedum Onuoha and keeper Geert De
Vlieger made a comfortable save. City
went close after 23 minutes but Darren Moore blocked a goal-bound strike
by Karl Bermingham. It took a penalty to break the deadlock, the lively
Richard Chaplow being fouled by Ian Bennett and Kamara leaving De Vlieger
no chance. City
hit back when the impressive Lee Croft made a devastating run before
playing the ball into the path of Bennett, who atoned for his earlier
mistake by firing home a great shot.

Steve Wigley: "I’m a little bit disappointed if I’m honest. I thought we did enough to win the game. We went behind when we’d had most of the possession which was a dubious penalty. In and around the final third, in the first half, we didn’t get enough balls in the box and we didn’t work the keeper. In the second half that changed and there were some good moves, and it was a great goal." "We nearly lost it in the last minute through giving the ball away – and that cost us two goals at Burton last week. We’ve got to make sure it is safety first." Source: mcfc.co.uk |
