The origins of modern day Preston North End can be traced
back to 1863 when they were originally founded as a cricket club, playing
their first game at ‘The Marsh’, a strip of land next to the River Ribble in
Ashton; they were known for a short period of time as Preston Nelson, but
soon adopted the name ‘North End' as they were based in the north end of
Preston.
The club’s move to the Deepdale area of the town dates back
to 1875, when land at Deepdale Farm was used. At this point, North End
adopted rugby as a second sport in an attempt to attract enough spectators
to offset the heavy costs of the cricketers. The move was a failure, North
End finding it impossible to compete with the already well established and
well supported Preston Grasshoppers.
After failing
with the move into rugby, and
prompted by the success
of association football in
East Lancashire, the club
decided to pursue a new direction. On
October 5, 1878, they
played their first match, losing 1-0 to Eagley FC. In 1880
they made the decision to permanently adopt the association code.
In 1888, North End became
one of the founder members of the Football League and what the club achieved
during that inaugural season would go down in football folklore. Not losing
a game all season, North End became league champions and lifted the FA Cup.
The club retained the league title the following season
but it would be the last time the men from Deepdale would be crowned
champions of England.
During the early decades
of the 20th century the club struggled to recapture it’s earlier success but
the late 1930’s, the 1940’s and the 1950s saw the club enjoy a renaissance.
During this period, North End fielded some of
Britain's
best known players of the time including
the likes of Tom Finney,
Bill Shankly,
and Tommy Docherty,
regularly attracting gates of over 30,000 for games at Deepdale.
The
1960/61 season saw the club grace the
top-flight of English football for the last time and from there on followed
a period of decline which saw the club gradually drop down
division after division. In 1986 the club had sank
so low that it had to apply for re-election after finishing 91st in the
Football League.
The last decade or so has
seen an upturn in North End’s fortunes with the club climbing
up the league and the redevelopment of
Deepdale. Now firmly established as a force in the
Championship, the North End faithful will be hoping that Paul Simpson
is the man to lead their team into the
Premiership and thus end a 46 year absence from top-flight football.
