The Saints can trace their roots back to the club formed in
1885 by members of St. Mary’s Church Young Men’s Association who played
their football on the banks of the River Itchen.
Originally called Southampton St. Mary’s, the club joined the
Southern League in 1894 and won the championship three years running between
1897 and 1899, and then again in 1901, 1903 and 1904.
They reached the first of their four FA Cup Finals in 1900,
losing 4-0 to Bury. They suffered a similar fate just two years later,
losing to Sheffield United following a replay. It was third time lucky in
1976 when a Bobby Stokes goal helped the then second division Saints to a
1-0 victory over Manchester United at Wembley.
Southampton’s last cup final appearance came in 2003 at the Millennium
Stadium, Cardiff, where they suffered a 1-0 defeat against Arsenal.
The early 1980’s, under the leadership of Lawrie McMenemy,
saw the club enjoy perhaps it’s greatest spell, finishing as league
runners-up to Liverpool in 1983/84 and regularly qualifying for Europe.
McMenemy left at the end of the 1984/85 season but under the
managership of the likes of Chris Nicholl, Alan Ball, Dave Jones and Glenn
Hoddle the Saints continued to be a top-flight force.
The 2004/05 season saw the Saints’ 27 year stay in the
top-flight come to an end, suffering relegation on the final day of the
season - the now legendary ‘Survival Sunday.’
Now under the guidance of
the highly rated George Burley, the Saints fortunes appear to be once again
on the up. With an impressive stadium, squad and fanbase, it’s surely only a
matter of time before Premiership football returns to Southampton.
