The ‘Shrimpers’ were founded on May 19, 1906 in the Blue Boar public house at a meeting convened by the pub’s landlord Oliver Trigg.

The new club immediately applied for, and were granted Southern League status, winning the Second Division title at the first attempt only to see promotion refused them due to financial concerns. United were not to be denied though and the following season they once again lifted the Second Division title. This time promotion was granted.

When Division Three of the Football League was established in 1920, virtually all of the English Section of the Southern League were elected into it, including United. Just one year later, following the decision to create a Third Division North and South, the club were moved into the latter, where they would remain until 1958 when the two divisions were once again combined.

After an existence spent entirely in the lower divisions, the 1990’s saw Southend enjoy easily the most successful spell in their history. The 1991/92 season, which saw United starting the season as favourites to go down, saw the club, under the managership of Dave Webb, achieve promotion to the second tier of English football for the first time. United spent six years at the higher level before two successive relegations saw them back in the Football League’s bottom division.

In November 2003, the threat of relegation to the Conference led to the sacking of manager Steve Wignall. Ex-Shrimpers player Steve Tilson was named caretaker-manager of the side and it turned out to be a masterstroke with Tilson leading the club to league safety and to the first ever national cup final in the club's history, losing to Blackpool 2-0 in the LDV Vans Trophy Final. In March of 2004 Tilson was offered the job of manager on a full time basis, and accepted the offer.

Tilson’s first full season in charge was even better, leading the club to 4th position in League Two and then promotion after a 2-0 victory over Lincoln City in the play-off final. The 2004/05 season also saw Southend once again in the final of the LDV Vans Trophy final although again Tilson's side lost, this time 2-0 to Wrexham after extra time.

The 2005/06 season saw even more success and this time silverware as Tilson guided Southend to the League One title ending a nine-year absence from the league's second tier.

Despite a struggling start to life in the Championship, hopes are high that with one of the game's brightest young managers in charge, and plans on the table for a new stadium, the dark days of basement football are well and truly over for United.
