Stoke City fan Rob, who runs Chiefdeliah Blog,
kindly
answered our 20 questions ahead of Saturday's game at The Hawthorns.
Why Stoke?
I'm from the city and come from a family of Stoke fans
(although shamefully my mother's from Port Vale country). So I never really had
a choice!
How long a fan?
22 years since my dad took me to my first game at the Old
Victoria Ground:
Highlight of supporting the club?
Wembley,
April 17th 2011: Stoke 5-0
Bolton FA Cup Semi Final
Low point
of supporting the club?
Relegation in 1998 in our first year at the Britannia was
pretty miserable. None of the wilderness years in the third tier were much fun,
except for the Macari era.
Favourite current Stoke player?
Robert Huth. Big, cynical, regularly commits atrocities for
the cause. Every team has a centre half who does that and the fans love him for
it, even if they don't like to admit it.
Favourite
all-time Stoke player?
Ricardo Fuller. A maverick and a magician who the team
depended on for years. Magic in his boots.
Thoughts on Stoke’s season so far?
It's a tough one. Results have been pretty good and we're
slowly seeing the team start to take shape, but we struggle to break teams down
and need to score more goals.
Happy with
Tony Pulis?
Less so than I was to be honest. He's done a marvellous job
but five seasons and £90m in I was hoping we'd start to play a bit more football
and aim higher than just survival. I don't mind the long ball stuff so much as
the setting up not to lose games rather than trying to win them. We're better
than that.
Where will
you finish the season?
I'd like to think top 10. Top 12 will do.
What were
your summer transfer dealings like? How have your signings settled in?
Mixed bag really. We've brought some quality in midfield in
the shape of Nzonzi and Charlie Adam, although the latter has been hit and miss.
US
international Geoff Cameron is in the process of being converted into a full
back despite never having played there before, with uneven results so far.
Michele Kightly started well but has been dropped already. Michael Owen has
played roughly an hour of football since signing and has done nothing of note.
Who's been your best player so far?
Steven Nzonzi has been a revelation in the centre of
midfield. An iron fist in a velvet glove.
Anyone been a let-down, anyone been particularly poor?
Owen looks a lame duck.
Stoke’s
style of play has been criticised by many over the years, most recently by
Fulham manager Martin Jol. Is it fair criticism or does your reputation now go
before you?
When we play with two flying wingers and some pace in the
side I think we're as good to watch as anyone. We can be horrendous as well
though and produce some turgid, lifeless rubbish. We're usually last on match of
the day for a reason.
I don't think we're especially dirty (Huth apart). We're hard
but fair, by and large.
Are there
any youngsters coming through the Stoke set-up you are particularly excited
about?
Not really, sadly. Pulis doesn't do youth.
Any particular memories of
Albion v Stoke games that stand out, I'd imagine probably too many
good ones to choose from?
The 4-3 in 1992/93 was great fun. More recently, Ricardo
Fuller's hat trick at the Brit the year we both went up was pretty special. Last
season's win at The Hawthorns with a dodgy goal from Shotton after being
dreadful all game is hard to beat for pure comedy value.
Thoughts on
Albion's season so far?
They've been outstanding and taken everybody by surprise.
Some were tipping them for relegation yet Clarke has got them playing some
electric stuff and hammering teams. Given your side cost a fraction of ours,
it's hard not to be a shade envious.
Albion
player you admire?
Lukaku would fit like a glove into how Stoke play. Always
though Morrison was a hugely underrated player.
Premier
League Champs?
Chelsea.
Three teams
for the drop?
Reading, Southampton, Wigan
Prediction
for Saturday’s game?
1-1
