WEST BROMWICH ALBION v CRYSTAL PALACE
FA Cup 3rd Round
Saturday 4th January 2014, 3:00pm
The Hawthorns

MATCH NOTES

The game will be the 48th league and cup meeting between Albion and Crystal Palace. The Baggies currently lead the way in the victory stakes with 21 wins compared to the Eagles' 13.

The two clubs have never met previously in the FA Cup - the only cup ties played being a League Cup clash at Selhurst Park in December 1981 which Albion won 3-1, and a Full Members Cup group match in October 1985 that Albion won 2-1.

Last season Albion were knocked out at the 3rd round stage by Queens Park Rangers whilst Palace also failed to make it past the 3rd round, losing to Stoke City.

Albion's last game on this date came in 2011 when they lost 3-0 away at Fulham in a Premier League clash. The Baggies' last win on January 4 came 10 years ago in 2003 when a Danny Dichio hat-trick helped Albion to a 3-1 win at home to Bradford City in the FA Cup 3rd round.

Crystal Palace's last game to take place on this date came in 2003, the Eagles winning 2-1 win away at Blackpool in the FA Cup 3rd round.

Albion have won just two of the last nine meetings of the two clubs.

Baggies' striker Shane Long has scored five goals in his last seven FA Cup appearances.

Albion's last six games: Newcastle United (H) 1-0; West Ham United (A) 3-3; Tottenham Hotspur (A) 1-1; Hull City (H) 1-1; Cardiff City (A) 0-1; Norwich City (H) 0-2

Crystal Palace's last six games: Norwich City (H) 1-1; Manchester City (A) 0-1; Aston Villa (A) 1-0; Newcastle United (H) 0-3; Chelsea (A) 1-2; Cardiff City (H) 2-0

TEAM NEWS

Albion

Baggies’ right-back Billy Jones is ruled out after suffering a cut eye and slight concussion during the New Year's Day win over Newcastle United.

Victor Anichebe is once again a doubt due to his groin problem but otherwise stand-in boss Keith Downing has a fully fit squad to choose from.

Squad from: Foster, Myhill, Daniels, Jones, Ridgewell, Olsson, McAuley, Lugano, Brunt, Sessegnon, Amalfitano, Mulumbu, Berahino, Yacob, Vydra, Long, Anelka, Morrison, Popov, Dawson, Reid, Sinclair, Gera, Rosenberg.

Crystal Palace

Palace boss Tony Pulis is expected to make a number of changes for Saturday’s clash at The Hawthorns.

Kagisho Dikgacoi (hamstring) looks set to miss out but fellow midfielder Stuart O'Keefe could make a return following his own hamstring injury.

Jack Hunt, Glenn Murray, former Baggie Jerome Thomas, Paddy McCarthy and Adlene Guedioura all remain sidelined through injury whilst former Albion striker Kevin Phillips is expected to miss out with Palace reluctant to allow him to become cup-tied ahead of a potential January move away from Selhurst Park.

Squad from: Speroni, Price, Ward, Gabbidon, Delaney, Parr, Mariappa, Moxey, Puncheon, Kebe, Jedinak, Bannan, O'Keefe, Williams, Bolasie, Gayle, Chamakh, Jerome, Wilbraham.

QUOTES

Albion caretaker-boss Keith Downing:

“We’d gone long enough without a win and beating Newcastle was a big lift,. There was a big relief after the game and it was down to a big contribution from everybody. We need to now kick on and, after that blip, we need to try and put a run together - and the FA Cup is part of that run.

“I’ve rotated the squad in the last four games. My intention from the moment I took over was to utilise everybody. I think we’ve done that and there will be no exceptions again tomorrow. I’m looking for the best team with the freshest legs and the energy to go again. Five games in 15 days is a big haul in the modern-day game. With the big squad we have it is important to use the players.

“As a traditionalist, I’m big on the FA Cup. You saw Wigan winning it last season. It’s an opportunity for clubs like ourselves to go all the way and achieve something. If you’re player; if you ask Ben Watson I’m sure the pinnacle of his career was to score the winning goal at Wembley, and he’ll say it was the best moment of his life. It’s a special competition and makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. I think it means a lot to the players. We haven’t progressed very far in cup competitions in recent times and we want to try and change that record and go as long as we can in the competition. There is still a buzz about it, and we’ll be trying to get through to the next round tomorrow.

“I think Palace have a fairly sizeable squad so I think Tony will be looking to add some freshness to his team. I have total respect for Tony Pulis, and whatever side he puts out will be organised and hard to beat. They certainly are a different Palace side to when they came a few weeks ago. They’ve picked up reasonably good results and went to Man City, showed some real resilience and could have won it or at least a draw.”

Baggies' defender Gareth McAuley:

“The changes Keith had made in the last few games, with four or five changes, shows the strength in depth that we have. The club added players in the summer to make us a better squad and we’re using it at the moment. It would be nice to have a cup run. It takes everyone’s attention away and gives everyone a break from the Premier League. We haven’t really had a proper run since I’ve been here so it would be nice.

“We have to take the good things we’ve been doing in the last couple of weeks with Keith [Downing] and Deano [Kiely] and hopefully build on it with a result on Saturday in the FA Cup. We need to put back-to-back results in the league together to get ourselves moving forwards. We’ve got the cup game first and it would be nice to win that one and then go into Southampton.

"We still back ourselves to do well, we’ve just drawn too many games. We haven’t been getting battered or getting the kind of results that make you feel sorry for yourself. But things have come to a head and we’ve had to come together. Hopefully we can stick together and put some results together.”

FIXTURE HISTORY

The first ever meeting of Albion and Crystal Palace came in a friendly game which took place at Selhurst Park in January 1930. Two goals from Joe Carter saw the Baggies run out 2-1 winners.

The first competitive meeting of the two clubs took place in September 1969 during Palace’s first ever season in the top-flight, Albion running out 3-1 winners at Selhurst Park. Danny Hegan, Bobby Hope and Jeff Astle scored for the Baggies whilst Cliff Jackson hit the hosts’ solitary reply. The return game at The Hawthorns in January saw Albion complete the double over Palace with a 3-2 victory, Jeff Astle hitting a hat-trick for Alan Ashman’s team.

Albion’s biggest win over Crystal Palace came during the 1988 season, the Baggies winning a thrilling game 5-3 at The Hawthorns. Robert Hopkins, John Paskin and a Don Goodman hat-trick helping to overcome a Palace side that featured future Arsenal legend Ian Wright who missed a penalty in the game.

The Londoners’ best win over Albion came in February 1973 at The Hawthorns when two goals each from Alan Whittle and Derek Possee gave the visitors a 4-0 victory.

Probably the most important meeting of the two clubs came in the final game of the 2001/02 season when Albion needed three points to clinch a place in the Premier League for the first time. Goals from Darren Moore and Bob Taylor in front of a full-house at The Hawthorns gave the Baggies a 2-0 win and a place in English football’s elite.

Albion’s recent record against Palace isn’t great having won just two of the last nine meetings.

Saido Berahino scored his sixth West Brom goal of the season as managerless Barclays Premier League basement boys Crystal Palace sunk to yet another defeat. Substitute Berahino opened the scoring in the 44th minute, collecting the ball from Stephane Sessegnon just inside the area and slotting home calmly. Albion's 2-0 win was then wrapped up in the 83rd minute when Gareth McAuley headed in from Chris Brunt's corner.

The result at The Hawthorns means Palace, overseen for a second successive match by caretaker boss Keith Millen, have now lost nine of their 10 league fixtures this term and their last seven in a row. As for the Baggies, it made for a welcome return to form after last week's 4-1 defeat at Liverpool, which had ended a five-match unbeaten run in the league. And for their 20-year-old forward Berahino, the success story simply continues. In what is truly proving a breakthrough season, this goal added to the one that had helped his team to all three points at Manchester United in September. His other four Albion goals have come in the Capital One Cup, and he has also scored four times for England Under-21s. Talks are ongoing between his representatives and West Brom over a new contract and Baggies fans will be eager to see a deal finalised.

The hosts, 11th in the table, began brightly and Shane Long, starting a league game for the first time since his proposed transfer deadline day move to Hull failed to materialise, tried to latch onto a ball over the top that deceived Julian Speroni, but the striker could not prevent it from going out of play. Virtually out of nowhere, Palace then fired a warning as their former Wolves midfielder Adlene Guedioura collected the ball from Marouane Chamakh's flick-on and cracked a shot inside the box that Boaz Myhill managed to parry at his near post. Chamakh attempted to burst through the Baggies defence soon - after only to overhit the ball, before Guedioura collided with Myhill and appeared to take a knee to the chest. Having been down for some time receiving treatment, the Algeria international was carried from the pitch on a stretcher, with Jason Puncheon replacing him. Around 10 minutes later Albion were forced into an early substitution of their own as Billy Jones, nursing an apparent hamstring problem, came off for Berahino. The game had gone into something of a lull, which James Morrison's shot blazed high over the bar and Puncheon's skewed effort across the face of goal did little to alleviate, but West Brom then snatched the lead with a minute of normal time remaining in the first half. Collecting the ball from Brunt on the left, Sessegnon found the space to drift into the Palace box and provided a cutback for Berahino, who took one touch with his right foot before finishing with his left. Berahino tried his luck again moments later with a shot from outsie the area that Speroni dealt with.

West Brom were again on the attack after the restart and it required a decent headed clearance from Joel Ward to avert the danger from a cross by Morgan Amalfitano, who then had strike blocked by Danny Gabbidon. Palace tried to hit back and after Myhill pushed a deflected Puncheon shot behind, Jedinak connected with Jerome Thomas' corner but sent his header narrowly wide. The ball then came to Chamakh in a dangerous position, and although he failed to control it and it ran away from him, it might have gone in. At the other end, Dean Moxey made a superb last-ditch tackle to take the ball away from Long, who had looked set to score following good work from Berahino, before Brunt steered an effort just wide. West Brom's second then duly arrived as McAuley crashed in Brunt's delivery. Palace strived to pull a goal back, with Myhill denying substitute Yannick Bolasie, but they were soon out of time.

Sporting Life

CURRENT CONNECTIONS

Baggies' on loan winger Scott Sinclair spent a short spell on loan at Selhurst Park from Chelsea in 2008.

Eagles' striker Kevin Phillips spent just two seasons at The Hawthorns but became a Baggies' legend in the process, hitting 46 goals in just 68 starts for the club. Phillips, who was an integral part of Tony Mowbray's Championship winning side of 2007/08, joined Palace initially on loan in January 2013 and was a key figure in their return to the Premier League.

Jerome Thomas joined Albion on a free transfer in August 2009 after being released by Portsmouth. He spent four fairly successful seasons at The Hawthorns before his contract expired in the summer of 2013. After not being offered a new deal by Albion, the winger joined Palace on a two year contract.

Welsh international defender Danny Gabbidon started his career at The Hawthorns, working his way up through the youth system before making his first team debut in March 1999 against Ipswich Town. He was surprisingly sold in September 2000 to Cardiff City where he would become an established international defender. He left Cardiff in 2005 and went on to spend six years with West Ham United. After leaving Upton Park in 2011 he joined Queens Park Rangers where he spent one season before joining Palace in the summer of 2012.
