Ahead of Saturday's game with Swansea City at
the Liberty Stadium, we caught up once more with Swans' fan Steven from City fanzine
Swansea Oh Swansea.
He gives us his views on the game, Swansea's start to the season, Albion's
prospects, and more. You can find Steven on
Twitter at @StevenSOS1987
It’s been an excellent start
to the season for Swansea with three wins out of three including an unexpected
triumph at Old Trafford on the opening day. How have performances been and have
the victories been deserved?
It has been an excellent start. We went to Old Trafford with
a game plan and it worked a treat, Manchester United barely threatened to be
honest because we defended in numbers. The main threats came from crosses and
Lukasz Fabianski commanded his box very well. We didn't create a lot but when we
went forward we looked like we could score every time.
Burnley last week wasn't as
good. We did well first half but were very average in the second, in truth they
were better than us after the break and should really have come away with a
point. The Rotherham game saw wholesale changes but we were more than worthy of
a narrow win there.
Swans’ fans
expectations for this season?
I think the fans were reasonably optimistic before a ball was
kicked and obviously now they're feeling much more confident. As ever the main
target is to get to 40 points and we'll see where we go from there. I would be
disappointed if that's all we achieved though, our record total in our three
seasons is 47 and I think we should definitely be looking to better that this
term. The team appears stronger this season which I will talk about more in the
answer to the next question.
What have the
club’s transfer dealings been like during the summer and is there anything else
needed before the window shuts?
Very good. One of the question marks over Garry Monk was over
his ability to attract players and he's emphatically answered that one.
Fabianski has made a very good start and I think he'll prove to better than
Michel Vorm who was no better than average last term. Gylfi Sigurdsson is a
brilliant signing and more than makes up for Michu leaving - two assists and a
goal so far already suggests he'll pick up where he left off a couple of years
back. Bafetimbi Gomis and Jefferson Montero have done well from the bench in
both league games so far while Federico Fernandez should be an improvement on
the erratic Chico Flores. We may still need a full back and winger before the
window closes with the former a more pressing concern but in general we're in
very good shape.
Player to
watch this season?
Already mentioned him once but it's got to be Sigurdsson.
Seven goals in eighteen appearances for us on loan in 2012 suggests he could hit
double figures this time fairly comfortably. His long range shooting, set
pieces, arriving late in the box and through balls have already been put to good
affect and I expect it to continue. His arrival means Michu really is no loss,
he didn't score after September last year and it was fairly obvious he wanted to
go so in that situation it was best to move him on and fortunately we've found
an excellent replacement.
Final thoughts
on 2013/14, enjoyable or a season to forget?
A strange year. I saw some of the biggest highs I'll ever see
- being in Valencia
and seeing us win 0-3 will live with me forever and my trip to
Napoli was equally enjoyable apart from the police messing us
around. The league wasn't so great though, we only took two points off the top
eight sides and worst of all we lost to Cardiff in one of the most gutless
displays I've seen in 16 years as a season ticket holder. However, if we'd been
offered 12th and Europa League last 32 at the start we would definitely have
taken it so therefore it would have to be regarded as a success.
Player of last
season?
Wilfried Bony - 25 goals in a debut season including 16 in
the league. He cleaned up at the end of season awards do.
Villain of last season?
Alvaro Vazquez - A striker who never once looked like scoring
in over 20 appearances. No idea what Michael Laudrup was thinking with this guy.
Prediction for Swansea’s season?
I'll say 12th. We could finish higher but I'd be quite happy
with that. A run in the cups would be good too and I think we'll take both of
them reasonably seriously.
Prediction for
Albion’s season?
I'll get my tin hat out here. I've predicted you to go down
I'm afraid. You were poor last year and Alan Irvine doesn't inspire me but I
must be honest and say I don't know a lot about most of your new signings so
they could prove me wrong. For what it's worth I hope you don't go down, You're
our closest away game, plus "The Vine" really is a great away day pub!
Premier League
Champions?
Fancy
Chelsea
here, Fabregas and Costa are brilliant signings and they'll take some stopping.
Manchester City are the only other team with a realistic chance in my opinion.
Relegated?
I'll go with what I predicted before a ball was kicked,
Burnley, Aston Villa and
West Brom. However I think Crystal Palace could be in there now Pulis has gone!
Prediction and
thoughts on Saturday’s game?
Think Garry Monk will want to win this one after we let a
lead slip to you last season. The Swans will line up 4-2-3-1 I would think with
Sigurdsson in behind Bony. I always back us to score with those two playing so
I'll say 2-1 Swansea.
