WEST BROMWICH ALBION v LIVERPOOL
Barclays Premier League
Sunday 15th May 2016, 3:00pm
The Hawthorns

MATCH NOTES

The game will be the 146th league and cup meeting between Albion and Liverpool. The Reds currently lead the way in the victory stakes with 66 wins to the Baggies' 38. There have been 74 meetings on Albion soil with the hosts winning 25 games and Liverpool 29.

There have been 19 Premier League meetings with Liverpool winning 12 and Albion four.

Albion's last game on this date came back in 2005 when on a never to be forgotten afternoon at The Hawthorns the Baggies pulled off the 'Great Escape' by beating Portsmouth 2-0. Bryan Robson's men had gone into the final game of the season bottom of the Premier League table but the victory over Pompey and results elsewhere meant survival was achieved.

Liverpool's last match on May 15 took place in 2011 when the Reds suffered a 2-0 defeat against Spurs at Anfield.

The Baggies have ended a league season with a game against Liverpool on two previous occasions - 1963/64 (H, 2-2) and 1921/22 (H, 1-4).

Albion have only once won their final Premier League game of the season - the aforementioned game against Portsmouth in 2005 (W1, D5, L3).

If named in the Albion starting XI, Craig Dawson will make his 100th start for the club.

Albion have had 106 shots on target in the Premier League this season, fewer than any other team.

Albion's last six games: Bournemouth (A) 1-1; West Ham United (H) 0-3; Tottenham Hotspur (A) 1-1; Arsenal (A) 0-2; Watford (H) 0-1; Manchester City (A) 1-2.

Liverpool's last six games: Chelsea (H) 1-1; Watford (H) 2-0; Villarreal (H, EL) 3-0; Swansea City (A) 1-3; Villarreal (A, EL) 0-1; Newcastle United (H) 2-2.

TEAM NEWS

Albion

Scottish international midfielder James Morrison could finally return following his lengthy injury lay-off.

The game might see a number of players feature for the Baggies for the last time - Morrison, Victor Anichebe and Stephane Sessegnon could all leave during the summer with the trio out of contract.

Liverpool

Striker Danny Ings could feature for the first time since suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury in mid-October whilst Jordan Henderson (knee) and Divock Origi (ankle) could also return.

FIXTURE HISTORY

The first league meeting between the two clubs took place in September 1894 at Stoney Lane. Albion ran out 5-0 winners thanks to goals from Billy Bassett, Billy Williams, Billy Richards, Roddie McLeod and Tommy Hutchinson. The return game at Anfield on New Years Day, 1895, ended in a 4-0 win for the Reds, Harry Bradshaw (2), Jimmy Ross and David Hannah the goalscorers.

Albion's best league win against Liverpool came in February 1936 at The Hawthorns, William 'G' Richardson helping himself to a hat-trick as the Baggies eased to a 6-1 victory.

Other big wins for the Baggies include 5-1 at home in 1938 and 5-2 - a score achieved twice - first at Anfield in 1951 and then at The Hawthorns on Christmas Day, 1953.

Liverpool's best win against the Baggies came at the Hawthorns in April 2003 when four goals from Michael Owen and two from Milan Baros saw Liverpool cruise to a 6-0 Premier League victory.

The Reds have registered a 5-0 victory against Albion on four occasions - at Anfield in 1900 and 1935, and at The Hawthorns in 1985 and 2004, John Wark hitting a hat-trick in the 1985 game.

Given the Baggies' struggles against the Reds over the years their recent record against Liverpool is fairly good, winning four of the last ten Premier League meetings and losing just three of them.

Liverpool's slim Champions League hopes suffered a huge blow as they were held to a disappointing 0-0 draw at West Brom. The Reds are fifth in the Barclays Premier League but only moved six points behind Manchester City before the champions' home game with Aston Villa. Jordon Ibe hit the bar for the visitors and Boaz Myhill saved from Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson. But they were left to rue a pedestrian performance with little goal threat from Mario Balotelli, who was hauled off in the second half. Simon Mignolet saved from Albion's James Morrison as West Brom edged towards safety but are still only seven points above the relegation zone.

Balotelli started his first top flight game since November while Ibe and Glen Johnson also returned as Steven Gerrard made his 500th Barclays Premier League appearance for Liverpool. West Brom were unchanged for the visit of the Reds following their 2-0 win over Crystal Palace with the Baggies on the brink of safety. And that was exactly how the hosts looked in an instantly forgettable first half where both sides' one-paced approach left The Hawthorns asleep. Liverpool, still smarting from their 2-1 FA Cup semi final defeat to Aston Villa, were expected to improve after a weak display at Wembley. Yet Brendan Rodgers' side offered little attacking threat aside from two brief flashpoints which barely troubled the hosts. First, Gerrard's free kick whistled over on 27 minutes before Balotelli's instinctive volley arrowed over eight minutes later. Without the injured Daniel Sturridge, the Italy international was Liverpool's focal point but again let Rodgers' side down with a lifeless performance.

The second half at least brought some excitement within 10 minutes of the restart when the Baggies survived a triple scare. Johnson's cross found Balotelli and his blocked shot fell to Coutinho, with Myhill saving his effort and then Henderson's follow-up. A minute later Craig Gardner guided Chris Brunt's cross into the sidenetting for Albion with the second half instantly more enthralling than the first. But Liverpool almost grabbed the lead on 62 minutes when Ibe swapped passes with Balotelli and darted into the area, only for his 10-yard effort to deflect off the bar. Suddenly, the game had opened up and the Baggies nearly went ahead when Mignolet saved Morrison's header after Martin Skrtel made a hash of Callum McManaman's cross. Liverpool looked the more likely to break the deadlock but it never came and Myhill calmly saved Gerrard's snapshot with 13 minutes left. Mignolet had to ensure a point with two minutes left when he saved McManaman's effort at the near post. But Dejan Lovren could have won it in injury time when he headed Gerrard's cross wide from eight yards.
