WEST BROMWICH ALBION v PORT VALE
Capital One Cup 2nd Round
Tuesday 25th August 2015, 8:00pm
The Hawthorns

MATCH NOTES

The game will be the 40th competitive meeting between Albion and Port Vale. The Baggies currently have 16 wins to their name compared to Vale's 13.

The clubs have met twice previously in League Cup action, both games taking place during the 1985/86 season. In a two-legged encounter, a Gerry Armstrong goal gave the Baggies a 1-0 win at The Hawthorns before a 2-2 draw at Vale Park saw Albion progress to the third round 3-2 on aggregate, Imre Varadi scoring both of the goals for Johnny Giles' men in the latter game.

The last competitive meeting between the sides came back in January 2000 when they played out a goalless draw at The Hawthorns in a League Division One clash.

Albion's last game on this date came in 2012 when an injury-time James Morrison goal earned the Baggies a point from a 1-1 Premier League draw at Tottenham Hotspur. The club's last win on August 25 came in 2003 when a Lee Hughes penalty was enough to give a Gary Megson-led team a 1-0 win at home over Preston North End.

Port Vale's last game on this date also took place in 2012, the Valiants recording a 3-1 win at Morecambe in a League Two encounter, Sam Morsy, John McCombe and Tom Pope the goalscorers.

Albion's last six games: Chelsea (H) 2-3; Watford (A) 0-0; Manchester City (H) 0-3; Bristol Rovers (A, Fr) 4-0; Walsall (A, Fr) 2-0; Swindon Town (A, Fr) 4-1.

Port Vale's last six games: Doncaster Rovers (H) 3-0; Swindon Town (A) 2-2; Gillingham (H) 1-1; Burnley (H, LC) 1-0; Crewe Alexandra (A) 0-0; Altrincham (A, Fr) 2-1.

TEAM NEWS

Albion

Baggies' boss Tony Pulis is likely to make a number of changes for the Hawthorns' clash but want-away striker Saido Berahino is once again unlikely to figure. Brown Ideye, Victor Anichebe and Serge Gnabry could all make their first starts of the season.

Port Vale

Influential midfielder Michael O'Connor (knee) and goalkeeper Chris Neal (ankle) are both missing for the Valiants despite edging closer to fitness.

FIXTURE HISTORY

The two clubs met regularly during the latter part of the 19th century in friendly and local cup action with Albion generally the team coming out on top. The very first meeting of the sides came in a friendly at Burslem in April 1884, the Baggies running out easy 6-0 winners.

The first league clashes took place in the Second Division during the 1901/02 season, the Baggies winning the first game at The Hawthorns in September 3-1 thanks to goals from Tommy Worton (2) and Andrew Smith. The return game at Vale's Athletic Ground saw the Baggies complete a league double with Chippy Simmons, Billy Lee and Worton scoring the goals in a 3-2 win. Albion would go on to win the title in what was their first ever season in the second tier.

Albion's biggest victory over Port Vale is 4-1, a scoreline recorded twice, both times at The Hawthorns - in April 1906 and in April 1931, William 'G' Richardson scoring a brace in the latter game.

Vale's biggest win over the Baggies came in March 1929 when they thrashed Albion 8-1 at the Old Recreation Ground, Albert Pynegar leading the scoring with a hat-trick.

Probably the previous meeting most supporters recall came at the end of the 1992/93 season when the two clubs met in the League Division Two play-off final at Wembley Stadium. Goals from Andy Hunt, Nicky Reid and Kevin Donovan gave the Baggies a memorable 3-0 victory and promotion in what was Ossie Ardiles only season in charge of the club.

Albion are currently eight games unbeaten against Vale with four wins and four draws from those games although the Baggies' recent home record against the Valiants is poor with just one win from 10 league and cup games.
