INTRODUCTION
Bobby Gould was once said to have been
unable to trap a bag of cement but totalled almost 200 goals for his various
League clubs, finishing as Coventry City's top scorer in their famous 1966-67
promotion season, netting in a League Cup final and helping West Ham win the FA
Cup.
His many transfers prepared him for his
coaching and managing posts, all 16 of them, and it was then that he developed a
certain, shall we say, eccentricity. Gould once resigned in the gents', quit
another post at half-time, let down the tyres of an intrusive camera crew and
led his side out of a Player of the Year dinner. As an international manager, he
turned up for a press conference wearing a muppet's mask and was locked in by
his players when he staged a training session at a prison.
But he was a brilliant talent-spotter and
put together most of the Coventry team who won the FA Cup. Then he got his hands
on the big prize himself after inspiring Wimbledon to one of Wembley's biggest
all-time shocks.
This is the story of how a proud Coventry
boy extracted every last drop out of himself as a player, then managed in his own
wacky style for three decades; the promotions, the Cup conquests, the Crazy Gang
capers, the hairdryer treatment from Fergie, the fall-out with Vinnie Jones, the
tears, the cock-ups, the hug and kiss from Cloughie - and, of course, the loving
and caring in his 'Punch and Judy' marriage to Marge.
