SYNOPSIS
There are fifteen league
soccer clubs in the Midlands and their histories are as varied as their
background.
In telling
the Midland soccer story, the author analyses the factors which have shaped the
destinies of the clubs. He examines their beginnings, support, finance,
publication and personalities and recalls famous players and exciting incidents
which reflect their fluctuating fortunes.
Some of
the club histories are both long and glorious, punctuated with outstanding
achievement. Aston Villa, Notts County and Stoke were founder members of the
Football League. Derby County, in spite of the gypsy's curse, have won both the
F.A. Cup and the League Championship. The small clubs - Walsall, Shrewsbury,
Mansfield and Port Vale - have had moments of glory, while Northampton Town have
been to the First Division - and back!
It is a
fascinating story told in such a way as to be compelling for the Midland soccer
fan and, for the soccer student, a valuable source of atmosphere and information
of ninety years of Midlands soccer. The book contains more than fifty
photographs and tables.
