NEWS, NOTES & MILESTONES
2003 - Baggies' legend, the late Jeff Astle, becomes the first person to
have a Midland Metro tram named after him. Astle's widow Laraine and comedian
Frank Skinner - a close friend of the former England striker, were present at
the naming ceremony at the Metro depot in Wednesbury.
1986 - After ten seasons in the First Division Albion are relegated
following their 1-0 defeat against Queens Park Rangers at Loftus Road.
1975 - Future England captain Bryan Robson makes his first team debut at
Bootham Crescent as the Baggies beat York City 3-1.
1886 - Albion win the Birmingham Cup for the first time, beating Walsall
Swifts 1-0 in a replay at Aston Lower Grounds.
BIRTHS
1951 - Alistair Brown
Musselburgh-born Ally Brown started his football career as an apprentice
with Leicester City in 1966 before turning professional two years later. He made
his first team debut against Sunderland in May 1969, scoring both goals in a 2-1
victory for the Foxes. The forward was a regular in the Leicester first team
over the next three seasons before joining Albion in a £61,111 deal in March
1972. He spent 11 years at The Hawthorns, scoring 85 goals in 359 appearances
for the club. On leaving the Baggies in March 1983 he joined Crystal Palace but
spent just five months at Selhurst Park before returning to the Midlands to join
Walsall. He spent a solitary season at Fellows Park where he helped the Saddlers
reach the League Cup semi-finals before he moved again, this time joining Port
Vale. He spent two years with Vale before hanging up his boots due to injury.
After his playing career ended he became a licensee, taking over the running of
the Halfords Lane Throstle Club in 1995, a role he held for eight years.
1893 - Jonathan Blagden
Inside-forward Jonathan Blagden spent just over two years at The Hawthorns but
struggled to gain a regular first team place, making just 20 appearances for the
club. The Sheffield-born player had joined Albion in April 1921 and would leave
for Worksop Town in June 1923. He retired from football in 1930 and died in
Dover, Kent in 1964.
(Some sources give Blagden's year of birth as 1900)
