2005 - Albion are reportedly watching Luton Town centre-half Curtis Davies. The 20 year-old defender, who was named League One Player of the Year last season is also said to be attracting the attentions of Arsenal and Fulham.

2004 - West Ham and England midfielder Michael Carrick has told Albion that he is not interested in a move to The Hawthorns. Albion were given permission to talk to the player last week but boss Gary Megson revealed "I've spoke to his agent and was told he didn’t fancy signing for us."

2004 - Albion reserves draw 0-0 at Haig Avenue, Southport against Everton. The team includes Kuszczak, O'Connor, Moore, Albrechtsen, Dobie and Wallwork who limps off after 55 minutes with a dead leg.

2002 - Albion play their first Premier League game when they face Manchester United at Old Trafford. The gate of 67,645, was at the time a record attendance for a league game involving the club.

 

1991 - The Baggies play their first ever game in the third tier of English football when they face Exeter City at The Hawthorns.

 

1985 - Albion and The Hawthorns play host to Oxford United's first ever top-flight game.

BIRTHS

 

1926 - Ray Barlow

 

Swindon-born Ray Barlow joined Albion as an amateur in June 1944, turning professional in November of the same year. He made his first team debut two months later and went on to make almost 500 appearances for the club before leaving for Birmingham City in the summer of 1960. One of Albion's all-time greats, Barlow was the last surviving member of the team that won the FA Cup in 1954 against Preston North End. He died on 14 March 2012, aged 85.
