BIRTHS

1928 - Jimmy Dudley

A member of Albion's 1954 FA Cup winning side, Glasgow-born Jimmy Dudley joined Albion as an amateur in the summer of 1944, turning professional a year later. He appeared in well over 300 matches for Albion including a run of 166 in succession from 1952-56, a club record which stood until Ally Robertson broke it in 1979.  He left The Hawthorns for local rivals Walsall in December 1959 and went on to make over 150 appearances for the Saddlers. He died on 25 April 2006 in West Bromwich aged 77.

DEATHS

1981 - Jack Vernon

Jack Vernon became Albion's record signing when he joined from Belfast Celtic in February 1947 for a fee of £9,500. Vernon, who signed a five year contract with the Baggies, would go on to be remembered as one of Albion's greatest defenders, making 200 appearances during his stay with the club. The Belfast-born star won caps for both Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, and played for both the United Kingdom and Great Britain representative sides. After leaving The Hawthorns, Vernon returned to Ireland with Crusaders before retiring from football in the summer of 1954. On hanging up his boots, Vernon took over his father's butchers' business in Belfast, which he continued to run until his death at the age of 61.
