BIRTHS

1954 - Tony Morley

Ormskirk-born Tony Morley started his playing career as an apprentice in 1969 in his native Lancashire with Preston North End. He spent seven years at Deepdale before making a £100,000 move to Burnley. It was during his time at Burnley that he caught the eye of some of the country’s bigger clubs and in June 1979 he joined Aston Villa in a £200,000 deal. He became a key figure in the Villa side that lifted the League Championship in 1981 and the European Cup in 1982. He moved to The Hawthorns in December 1983 for a fee of £75,000, scoring on his debut for the Baggies in a 2-1 defeat against Queens Park Rangers. He was an ever-present for Albion for the remainder of the season but the 1984/85 campaign saw the winger fall out of favour with boss Johnny Giles. Morley spent a short but successful loan spell at Birmingham City in the winter of 1984 before leaving Albion permanently in August 1985 to join Hong Kong club Seiko. After one season in Hong Kong and a spell in Holland with FC Den Haag, Morley returned to The Hawthorns in July 1987 for a second time. He became a key figure for the Baggies during the 1987/88 season, scoring eight goals in 32 games as the club battled relegation under his old boss Ron Saunders and then Ron Atkinson. After a short spell on loan at one of his previous clubs Burnley, Morley left Albion for a spell in America with Tampa Bay Rowdies. After further short spells in Malta and New Zealand, Morley, who won six England caps during his time at Villa Park, dropped into the local West Midlands non-league scene where he ended his playing career.
