NEWS, NOTES & MILESTONES
2005 -
Albion's
Nigerian striker Kanu admits for the first time that he will leave The
Hawthorns in the summer should the club be relegated.
"I'm a
very positive person and I'm not thinking of the club going down," Kanu
told BBC Sport. "I'd rather give my best like every other person in the
team to keep them up. I love the fans and would be happy to remain if
possible until the end of my career. Everyone is saying we are going down
but we the players feel otherwise and are ready to give our best all the
time, but if the team goes down I will leave. I don't want to be playing
in the lower division, as it is not good for my career."
1969 - Albion, the FA Cup holders, lose their grip on the trophy
when they lose 1-0 to Leicester City in a semi-final tie at Hillsborough.
Boyhood Baggies' fan Allan Clarke scored the goal that ended Albion's long
unbeaten run in the competition which stood at 14 games.
1959 - One of Albion's all-time greats William 'G' Richardson
collapses and dies whilst playing in a charity game in Birmingham. He was
just 49 years of age and still a part of the club's coaching staff.

2008 - Albion 4-3 Colchester United - League Championship - The Hawthorns
BIRTHS
1983 - Somen Tchoyi
Cameroon international attacker Somen Tchoyi joined
Albion in August 2010 from Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg. Despite possessing
strength, pace and skill he struggled to gain a regular starting place whilst at
The Hawthorns although he was generally a popular figure amongst the Baggies'
faithful. The highlight of his spell at the club undoubtedly came on the last
day of the 2010/11 season when he came on as a half-time substitute to hit a second half
hat-trick at Newcastle to earn Albion a point after they had been 3-0 down. He was released by the club in May 2012 and despite trials at both
Birmingham City and Wolves he left England to return abroad, signing for German
side FC Augsburg.
1974 - Sean Gregan
Guisborough born Sean Gregan made his Football
League debut for Darlington in December 1991 at the age of 17. Despite his young
age he became a regular in the 'Quakers' side and went on to make over 150
appearances for the club before making a £350,000 move to Preston North End in
November 1996. In almost six years at Deepdale he made over 250 appearances and
became a club legend in the process. In August 2002 he moved to The Hawthorns in
a £2million deal prior to the club's first season in the Premier League. Played
as a midfielder for the majority of his time at Albion, Gregan became a popular
figure amongst supporters and lead the club to promotion back into the Premier
League in 2004. He left Albion in September of that year, joining Leeds United
where he would spend two years. In November 2006 he moved onto Oldham Athletic
where he would stay until January 2011. Short spells at Fleetwood Town and
Kendal Town followed before he returned to his first club Darlington as
player/coach in June 2012.
1970 - Alan Miller
Londoner Alan Miller began his career in Arsenal's
youth system, progressing through the ranks before signing his first
professional contract in 1988. His Football League debut came later that year
during a loan spell at Plymouth Argyle. Due to the presence of John Lukic and
then David Seaman in
the Gunners' goal, Miller struggled to gain regular football at Highbury and was
loaned out again in August 1991, this time to Albion. He made three appearances
for the Baggies including one in the club's first ever game at Third Division
level - a 6-3 win over Exeter City on the opening day of the 1991/92 season.
After making just eight first team appearances in six years at Arsenal he joined
Middlesbrough in 1994 in a £500,000 deal. He was a regular in his first season
at the club but eventually fell out of favour, loan spells at Huddersfield Town
and Grimsby Town followed before he returned to The Hawthorns in February 1997
for a fee of £400,000. In his three years at Albion he made 113 appearances and
became a huge fan favourite in the process. With the club struggling financially
he was sold to Blackburn Rovers in February 2000. He never again recaptured the
form shown whilst with Albion and after a handful of appearances for Rovers, and
short loan spells at Bristol City, Coventry City and St Johnstone, he announced
his retirement due to injury in April 2003.
1968 - David Smith
Gloucestershire born David Smith started his career
as an apprentice with Coventry City in 1984, signing professional terms two
years later. At the age of 19 he made his first team debut for the Sky Blues at
Old Trafford in a 1-0 defeat against Manchester United. The winger became a
regular for Coventry and for a spell was one of the country's brightest
prospects, winning ten England under-21 caps. He left Highfield Road in March
1993 to join Birmingham City but would spend less than a year there before
joining Albion in a £90,000 deal. He spent four year at The Hawthorns, making
over 100 appearances, before he left to rejoin his old boss Alan Buckley at
Grimsby Town. He spent four years with the Mariners before he ended his playing
career with a short spell at Swansea City. In 2004 Smith returned to Grimsby to work in
the club's commercial department, a role he continues in to this day.
1945 - Eddie Colquhoun
Scotsman Eddie Colquhoun started his professional
playing career at Bury, spending five years at Gigg Lane before making a £25,000
move to The Hawthorns in February 1967. He became a regular for the Baggies but
a broken leg suffered at Newcastle United in April 1968 would as good as end his
Albion career. He would make just two more first team appearances for the club
before leaving for Sheffield United in October 1968. He would spend 10 years
with the Blades, making over 400 appearances for them as well as captaining the
club to the Second Division title in 1971. After leaving United he spent four
years in the North American Soccer League before hanging up his
boots in 1982. Colquhoun won nine full Scottish caps during his playing career.
DEATHS
1959 - William 'G' Richardson
A true legend of the game, County Durham born Billy
'Ginger' Richardson started his playing career with Third Division North side
Hartlepools United in August 1928. Despite United's struggles during the 1928/29
season, Richardson hit 19 goals in just 29 appearances for the club. He was
snapped up by Albion in the summer of 1929 for a fee of £1,250 which he would
repay the club many times over. He failed to earn a regular place in the team
during his first season at the club but the 1930/31 season saw him become a
pivotal figure as the Baggies completed the unique double of promotion and a FA
Cup win, Richardson scoring both goals in the final itself as Albion beat
Birmingham City 2-1 at Wembley. From then on Richardson was never out of the
goals, setting a club record of 40 league and cup goals during the 1935/36
season. He hit 14 league and cup hat-tricks for the Baggies including four
'fours', one of which famously came in five minutes at West Ham United in
November 1931. His goalscoring feats continued during wartime football where he
hit over 123 goals in just 106 games including friendlies. In November 1945 he
left Albion for Shrewsbury Town after netting 328 goals in 444 competitive
appearances for the club, a goal tally that almost certainly will never be
beaten. He returned to The Hawthorns less than a year later
taking on the role of assistant trainer-coach, a role that he held until his untimely
death in 1959 at the age of just 49 whilst playing in a charity match in
Birmingham.
