NEWS, NOTES & MILESTONES

2014 - Pepe Mel takes charge of his last game as Albion boss - the Spaniard left the club by mutual consent just 24 hours later. Mel was in charge at The Hawthorns for just four months and won only three out of 17 games.

2006 - Young Albion striker Stuart Nicholson is called into the England Under-19 squad for the upcoming UEFA Championship elite round tournament in Belgium.

2006 - Albion are the latest club to be linked with Cardiff City striker Cameron Jerome. The England Under-21 star looks set to leave Ninian Park during the summer and Albion are reportedly ready to make a move for the £3million rated player, possibly offering out of favour midfielder Jason Koumas in part exchange.

2003 - Bob Taylor makes his final appearance for the Baggies. In two spells at The Hawthorns he scored 131 goals in 377 games to leave him lying eighth on Albion's all-time goalscorers' list.

1995 - Darren Bradley, Bernard McNally, Tony Lange, Steve Lilwall. Neil Parsley, Kieran O'Regan, Roy Hunter and Brett Love are all handed free transfers by Baggies' boss Alan Buckley.

1991 - Albion are relegated to the third tier of English football for the very first time. Needing a victory against Bristol Rovers at Bath City's Twerton Park, the Baggies could only manage a 1-1 draw despite playing against 10 men for the majority of the match following Carl Saunders' early sending-off. Albion's failure to win ensured safety for Leicester City.

1981 - Albion begin their three game tour of North America with a 2-1 defeat to Canadian side Vancouver Whitecaps.

BIRTHS

1925 - George Corbett

Born in North Walbottle, Newcastle-on-Tyne, full-back George Corbett made just one first team appearance for the Baggies after joining from Spennymoor United in March 1951. He had started his playing career with Sheffield Wednesday in 1945 but failed to make a single appearance for the club, moving onto Spennymoor just one year later. He spent almost five years with the non-league club before he moved to The Hawthorns for a reported fee of £800. After leaving Albion in June 1953 he spent a season with Workington Town. It is believed Corbett returned to Spennymoor for a second spell before joining Scottish League club Berwick Rangers for whom he played during the 1956/57 season. Corbett died in his home city in the summer of 1999.
