NEWS, NOTES & MILESTONES

2000 - Lee Hughes hits his second hat-trick in a week as the club down Preston North End 3-1 at The Hawthorns.

1994 - Welsh international striker Tony Rees joins Albion in a £30,000 deal from Grimsby Town. The former Aston Villa and Birmingham City man is reunited with Alan Buckley -  his former boss at Blundell Park.

1922 - Baggies' legend Tommy Glidden makes the first of his 479 appearances for the club.

BIRTHS

1964 - Stacey North

Luton-born Stacey North started his football career as an apprentice with his hometown club in 1981. He turned professional the following year but didn’t appear in Town’s first team until May 1984 when he made his debut, ironically against Albion, in a 3-0 defeat at The Hawthorns. He struggled to nail down a regular place in Luton’s first team and the defender spent a short spell on loan at Wolves. He left Luton for good in December 1987 when Ron Atkinson splashed out £120,000 to bring the defender to the Midlands. His first season and a half at the club was pretty successful with the player finally playing regularly and becoming a key member of the team. The 1989/90 season however saw his form drop and he became a target for abuse from the fans. He left The Hawthorns for Fulham in October 1990 but a back injury restricted him to just 43 appearances at Craven Cottage before he was forced into retirement.

1913 - Bill Brockhurst

Bill Brockhurst joined Albion as an amateur in March 1935, signing professional terms some six months later. The Brownhills born defender, who died in 1995, spent three years at The Hawthorns but made just five appearances before leaving to join Hednesford Town.
