NEWS, NOTES & MILESTONES

2014 - Albion end a thirty year wait for a victory at White Hart Lane as they beat Spurs 1-0 thanks to a James Morrison goal.

2002 - Russell Hoult becomes the first Albion goalkeeper to be sent-off in 107 years when he is dismissed against Liverpool at Anfield. His replacement Joe Murphy, making his Baggies' debut, saves the resulting penalty from Michael Owen.

2000 - Danny Gabbidon completes a £175,000 move to Cardiff City. The defender joined Albion as an apprentice in 1996, signing professionally two years later. The fee for Gabbidon, who had already spent a month on loan with the Welsh club, could rise to £500,000 dependent on certain clauses being activated.

1994 - Out of contract defender Gary Strodder turns down the offer of a new one year deal. Strodder, who is currently signing on a week to week basis, is reported to be holding out for a two year contract.

1957 - Albion record their biggest home league win since 1892 when they beat Manchester City 9-2.

BIRTHS

1956 - Tony Grealish

Republic of Ireland international Tony Grealish joined Albion in March 1984 from Manchester City in an £80,000 deal. The Paddington-born midfielder started his career with Leyton Orient in 1973 and spent six years at Brisbane Road before moving onto Luton Town, Brighton & Hove Albion and then Manchester City. He made over 70 appearances for the Baggies before returning to Maine Road in October 1986. A spell at Rotherham United followed before he became a player/coach for Walsall and then Bromsgrove Rovers. Grealish, who regularly played for the West Bromwich Albion 'All Stars' after his retirement, died on April 23, 2013, at the age of 56 following a battle with cancer.

1878 - Arthur Smith

West Bromwich-born Arthur Smith spent three years as an Albion player after joining the club from local football in 1898. He made just six appearances for the Baggies before a dislocated ankle ended his playing career. After hanging up his boots he became a Football League linesman and then a referee. Smith, who served as Mayor of West Bromwich from 1944-45, died in his hometown in 1953.
