The club re-sign Lee Hughes from Coventry City for a fee of £2,500,000 and break the club's transfer record in the process.

2003 Relegated after just one season in The Premier League finishing 19th.

2004 Regain place in The Premier League by finishing runners up to Norwich City.

The club break their transfer record twice in two months. First they sign Martin Albrechtsen from FC Copenhagen for £2,700,000 and then Rob Earnshaw becomes the club's first ever £3,000,000 signing when he joins from Cardiff City.

Bryan Robson takes over as manager replacing Gary Megson.

2005 Retain their place in The Premiership on a dramatic final day of the season by beating Portsmouth 2-0 at The Hawthorns.
