The Southern Junior Floodlit
Cup ran between 1955 and 1999.
Albion first entered the
competition during the 1972/73 campaign, reaching the quarter-finals before
suffering a 2-1 defeat at the hands of local rivals Aston Villa.
The 1973/74 season saw the
Baggies go one stage further, reaching the semi-finals after taking revenge
on Villa with a 3-2 win at Villa Park. However, before the semi-finals were
played, the organisers decided to abandon the season’s tournament due to a
fixture backlog caused by the nation’s energy crisis.
Albion would not enter the competition again until 1987.
From their return during the
1987/88 season, up until the competition’s final season of 1998/99, the Baggies
experienced very little success, only once managing to get past the second round
in twelve attempts.
