The game against Black Lake Victoria on December 13, 1879,  was long thought to have been the club's first ever game, indeed, the club's centenary was celebrated during the 1979/80 season.

Research undertaken in 1990 however found evidence of West Bromwich Strollers playing a game in November 1878 - It was thought that the Strollers and Albion were the same club but this now appears to not be the case.

Further research in 1997 found five more games that had been played by Albion earlier than the club's supposed initial game against Black Lake, a game in which Harry Aston is said to have been the goalscorer, a fact disputed by some Albion historians who claim they have failed to find evidence of the scorer being named.
