Graham Dorrans struck twice as Albion claimed a priceless win over nine-man Scunthorpe on a controversial day at Glanford Park. Dorrans missed a penalty that would have given him a hat-trick but Gianni Zuiverloon fired the Baggies’ third after Andrew Wright and Grant McCann were sent off for the Iron.

Dorrans’ first-half opener was cancelled out by Rob Jones but Wright was sent off for two bookable offences before Dorrans won and converted a penalty. Luke Moore won another spot-kick that was missed by Dorrans but Grant McCann had been dismissed for his appeals against the decision. Joe Murphy saved from Dorrans but Zuiverloon then completed the scoring.

Albion applied all the early pressure but they had a scare when they were undone by a simple long ball and flick-on that sent Garry Thompson clear. The Baggies were grateful to see his shot drift wide of the target. Albion thought they were in front on 18 minutes when Luke Moore seized on a collision between keeper Joe Murphy and defender David Mirfin to score into an empty net, only for his ‘goal’ to be ruled out for handball. However, it took just two more minutes for the Baggies to claim the lead as a cross from the left by Thomas was only palmed away by Murphy and Dorrans lashed home a left-footed shot from inside the area. They weathered a minor Scunthorpe storm in the moments that followed before going close again seven minutes from the break. Jonas Olsson started the move with some composure at the back and it ended with Brunt finding space 25 yards from goal to send a low shot just wide.

However, the home side drew level out of the blue two minutes into the second half. A corner from the right and a shot from Josh Wright brought a save from Dean Kiely but Jones pounced to equalise. However, the game turned decisively in Albion’s favour in a three-minute spell just after the hour mark. First came Andrew Wright’s dismissal for a second yellow card after he felled Thomas. The Baggies found the net from the resultant free-kick with a Moore header, only for an offside flag to come to the home side’s rescue. But there was no escape for the Iron on 65 minutes as referee Jon Moss again upset the home crowd, awarding a penalty against Michael O’Connor for a foul on Dorrans. The young Scot kept his cool to drive the spot-kick past an irate Murphy. Ten minutes later came another spot-kick for Jones’s foul on Moore and another red card – a straight one for Grant McCann’s reaction. But this time Dorrans’ low kick was poor and Murphy made the save. However, it was 3-1 with four minutes to go as Zuiverloon drove into the box and drilled a shot into the roof of the net.

Express & Star

Roberto di Matteo:

"That's six points out of six from the two Christmas games and just what we wanted to keep up the pressure at the top of the table.

"I thought we were in control for most of this game. We might have been more than one goal in front by the interval and it was disappointing to see Scunthorpe come back on level terms from a set-piece situation.

"As far as the two penalties are concerned, I did not really get a good view of the first decision but the second looked a clear penalty to me.

"My players had to be careful to keep their discipline because the home crowd were trying to influence the decisions of the referee."

Nigel Adkins:

"I know the referee does not have access to technology when he is making his decisions but I have looked at both penalties on the DVD, the first was a good challenge and with the second both players made contact with the ball at the same time.

"We also had a player sent off on Boxing Day at Middlesbrough and these decisions are very disappointing.

"I will be going in to see the referee because he has sent one of my players off for using foul and abusive language but I will be wanting to talk to him about the manner in which he has spoken to some of my players during the game."
