"At this stage of the season there will be a few names banded about on the transfer front in the media," said Robson. "It is almost 100 per cent that Almeyda will be coming in in early January. I'll be hoping to get him in for the FA Cup game at Preston. We have made a few other enquiries and I'm hoping for some successful return phone calls. But there is nothing more I can say at the moment."

Albion snatch lucky point

Despite another very poor performance Albion claim a valuable point from a 1-1 draw on their first visit to Manchester City's very impressive City of Manchester Stadium. In front of a crowd of 47,177 French star Nicolas Anelka gave City the lead on 32 minutes with an excellent free-kick that gave Albion's man of the match Russell Hoult no chance. That goal looked set to have given City all three points until six minutes from time when City defender Richard Dunne scored a bizarre own goal following a mix up with England keeper David James. For the second successive game Albion were reduced to 10 men, Thomas Gaardsoe seeing red on 17 minutes for hauling down Robbie Fowler when the former Liverpool striker was through on goal. During the game Albion fans once again vented their frustration at manager Bryan Robson's tactics and briefly chanted for him to be sacked.

Juninho link denied

Brazilian star Juninho's agent Brian Hassall plays down speculation linking the former Middlesbrough midfielder with a move to The Hawthorns. Hassall said: "Nobody has said anything to me. West Brom are rock bottom and I couldn't imagine he would want to go there as much as he likes Bryan. When you stop to think about it, Bryan has also got Kanu there and they are too similar. I am not saying that Juninho is not better in my opinion, but I would be quite surprised if they wanted him."

Quartet can go

Adam Chambers, Sekou Berthe, Phil Midworth and Simon Miotto are all offered free transfers by the club. Manager Bryan Robson informed the quartet whose contracts all run out next summer, they can find new clubs. Robson said: "Having now had chance to assess the squad, I've decided Adam, Sekou, Simon and Phil are not part of my plans. The chairman and I have spoken about cutting the size of the squad down and I don't feel I will be using these lads in the Premiership. But they're all terrific pros who I'm sure will do a good job elsewhere." Chambers' last appearance for the club came against Manchester United in the Carling Cup over a year ago whilst Berthe hasn't figured for the team since October 2003. Midworth and Miotto have never figured in Albion's first team.

Almeyda not signed yet

"He hasn't put pen to paper yet but we are a long way down the road and hopefully everything will go through. "We're in discussions with a few clubs about certain players and by the middle of January we'll hopefully have a few new players at the club but only time will tell as far as that is concerned."

Inamoto joins Bluebirds

Junichi Inamoto joins Championship side Cardiff City on a month's loan. The move is intended to help the Japanese international gain some much needed match fitness. He looks set to make his debut against Albion's Black Country rivals Wolves on Boxing Day. Albion boss Bryan Robson said: "Ina's short of match fitness and the Cardiff manager, Lennie Lawrence, has been in touch to say he would like to use Ina. With all the Christmas games coming up, that will be a better way for me to have a look at him rather than him being a training ground player. He needs to play football to get match fit. If he can impress me by playing well for Cardiff, we'll be looking to bring Ina back."

Former stars call for unity

The West Bromwich Albion Former Players' Association issue a statement calling on supporters to get behind the players and Bryan Robson during forthcoming games. The statement read: "The WBA Former Players Association, under the presidency of Brendon Batson, chairman Graham Williams and committee members Ally Robertson and Nicky Cross, wish to give their whole-hearted support to Bryan Robson and the team during this difficult period for them. Former players, including the likes of Cyrille Regis and Tony Brown, have appreciated the support given to the players by the supporters over the years and the association feels we all need to pull together to maintain our Premiership status. The loyalty of the fans has gone a long way to making this club what it is today and the team and management needs that support over the next four very important games. The former greats back Bryan and the team and we trust everyone will follow suit. With this total support, we can all enjoy a merry Christmas and happy New Year."

Siggy quits

Defender Larus Sigurdsson admits defeat in his battle against long-term injury and announces his retirement from the game. The former Icelandic international has been forced to take the decision to end his career after failing to recover from the third major knee injury suffered during his time at the Albion.

His first injury occurred during Gary Megson's opening game in charge of Albion at Stockport in March, 2000, when he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Sigurdsson's last senior appearance for the club came at Crystal Palace in September 2003 when he damaged the cartilage in his left knee. Four months later, as he made his comeback with the reserves, he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. During his attempt to return from that last injury, the problem picked up in the Palace game continued to flare up when he reached intense phases of rehabilitation work.

The 31 year old made 129 appearances for the club and scored 1 goal. He now plans to return to Iceland with wife Disa and sons Sigurdur and Aron after saying farewell to the fans during next week's home game with Charlton.

Sigurdsson said of the decision to retire: "I've been struggling with my injuries for almost a year and a half now and every time I reached a certain level my left knee just kept breaking down, I was then asked the questions 'how long do you want to carry on?' and 'how much do you want to risk permanent damage to your knee?' We decided to give it one more go - but the knee broke down again. So the decision to retire was really made for me. It's been very hard to accept. I'd never had a serious injury before I came to West Brom and I've been very unlucky."

Horsfield staying

Albion boss Bryan Robson has played down talk of striker Geoff Horsfield leaving The Hawthorns. The ex-Birmingham and Fulham star has been strongly linked with a move to Championship side Sheffield United. "We've got four strikers in the club and until that January transfer window comes open, there is no way I would change that."

Kanu pledges future

Nigerian star Kanu pledges his immediate future to the club. Speaking about his future at the Hawthorns, Kanu said: “When I came here in the summer I knew what the club was all about.
