Albion in late swoop for Quashie
Albion make a late swoop on
transfer deadline day by signing
Southampton captain Nigel Quashie in a £1.2million deal. The
midfielder’s fee could rise by a further £200,000 subject to
performance-related add-ons.
The
Scotland international has put pen to paper on a three-and-a-half year
contract which will keep him at The Hawthorns until the summer of 2009.
Quashie, a former England Under-21 international started his
career at Queens Park Rangers before moving onto
Nottingham Forest,
Portsmouth and then Southampton, whom he joined in January 2005 in a
controversial £2.1million move.
Stalemate at The Valley
Albion claim an important
point from a goalless draw against Charlton Athletic at The Valley. A
largely uneventful game saw Albion thankful to Polish keeper Tomasz Kuszczak
for a number of important saves. A crowd of 25,921 were in attendance.
Earnie
departs
Albion striker Rob Earnshaw
leaves the club, signing for Championship side Norwich City. The deal sees
the Baggies receive a guaranteed £2.75million, plus a further £750,000
subject to performance-related add-ons. Albion will also receive 10% of any
transfer fee should City decide to sell the Welsh international.
The Zambian born star has signed a three and a half year deal at Carrow
Road.
The striker moved to The Hawthorns from
Cardiff City for £3.6million
in August 2004 but failed to claim a regular place in the starting line-up
despite boasting an impressive goals per game ratio. It was his failure to
gain regular first team football that led to the player putting in two
transfer requests, both being turned down by Albion boss Bryan Robson.
But with the player clearly intent on a move away from the
club Robson felt there was little point in keeping the player. "I had a word
with Rob on Monday and asked him if he'd withdraw his transfer request. He
said he wouldn't do that. I wanted him to fight
for his place. But what I don't want at my football club is players who
don't want to be here.”
"Southampton made an offer for him but
Norwich came in at the last
minute and gave us the money we were after.”
"He's scored one Premiership goal this term and that was
coming off the bench. I needed to see more consistency in his performances
for him to get in the team regularly - I didn't see that. You have to earn
your place in the team and I didn't think Earnie did that for us this
season.”
“He wants to play regular first-team football because he
wants to impress his international manager. It's his decision and I couldn't
guarantee him first-team football every week."
Norwich boss Nigel
Worthington, speaking after his side’s 4-0 defeat against Reading added:
"I'm glad everything has already been sent to the Football League because he
might have changed his mind after watching that.”
“It's a good price for a good player who is proven at this
level."
Earnshaw, Albion's all-time record
signing, scored 17 goals in 50 appearances for
Albion, 23 of those
appearances coming as a substitute. His last
appearance came at Reading in the FA Cup replay
defeat.
Albion snap up Martinez
Albion complete the signing
of Uruguayan central defender Williams Martinez. The Uruguay international,
who plays his club football for Defensor, has moved to The Hawthorns on loan
for the remainder of the season with a view to a permanent £2 million move
in the summer.
The 23 year-old, who was recommended to Bryan Robson by
Uruguayan legend Daniel Fonseca, has passed a medical and agreed personal
terms. The deal is now subject to ratification by the FA, including
international clearance.
Speaking about his new signing,
Albion boss Robson told
wba.co.uk: "Williams will have three training days with us on Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday and I'll have a look at him before the
Blackburn game.”
"You always prefer to have an experienced centre-half playing
alongside a younger one but if they're good enough, it doesn't matter what
age they are. Curtis Davies has shown that and if Williams is anywhere near
as good as Curtis, I'll be very happy."
The defender himself was clearly pleased with the move.
"Everything happened so fast that I even didn't have the chance to visit my
team from Defensor Sporting,"
Martinez
told Tendield TV.
"The officials of Defensor and my agent told me that I had to
gather my personal things as quick as possible because I have to travel to
England
and present myself in West Bromwich Albion.”
"I am very glad of this chance and I hope that I can get
adapted as soon as possible, most of all the weather because lately in
Uruguay it has been very hot and I know that currently in Europe it's being
very cold."
Duo through in Nations Cup
Albion duo Kanu (Nigeria)
and Diomansy Kamara (Senegal) both reach the African Nations Cup
quarter-finals with their respective countries.
The two players came face to face
in a group D decider which
Nigeria won 2-1,
substitute Kanu setting up Obafemi Martins’ 88th
minute winner. Senegal will still take their place
in the last eight after finishing as group
runners-up thanks to a superior goal difference over nearest rivals Ghana.
Monday 30th January 2006
Albion set for double swoop
Baggies’ boss Bryan Robson reveals he is hoping to complete a
double transfer swoop before tomorrow’s deadline by snapping up
Southampton midfielder Nigel
Quashie and Uruguayan central defender Williams Martinez.
The club are in talks with Defensor defender Martinez over a
loan move until the end of the season, with a view to a permanent transfer,
and are also in negotiations with Scotland international Quashie's agents
over a move to The Hawthorns.
Speaking about 23 year-old
Martinez, Albion boss Robson
told the club’s official website: "Williams is captain of his club and has
got into the last couple of
Uruguay
squads. He's a good tackler but also has very good technique. The reason I
say that is that when his team get a free-kick, he is the one who takes
them. He uses the ball very well but is also a no-nonsense centre-half.”
"I've been talking to Daniel Fonseca, who knows all the
Uruguayan players, over the last three months about the players over there.
Williams comes highly recommended by him as probably the best young player
in Uruguay at the
moment. From what I've seen of him, he does have very good attributes. How
long it would take him to settle down into Premiership football and the pace
of the game, only time will tell."
As for
Southampton star Quashie, Robson admitted he is a long-term admirer of
the player: "The chairman is in negotiations with Quashie's agents at the
moment. I've always liked Nigel - when he played for QPR,
Portsmouth and now
Southampton. He's an intelligent player. He's got good stamina and is a very
good passer of the ball. He's also got the experience of relegation fights
and playing in the Premiership. I feel he'll improve our squad.”
The 27
year-old is also rumoured to be a target for Scottish giants Rangers and
Celtic whilst Albion's Premiership rivals Portsmouth and Middlesbrough are
both said to be interested in signing the player too.
If the Quashie deal does go
through, young Albion midfielder Richard Chaplow could be heading to
Southampton as part of the
deal.
"Chappy could be part of the
deal, with him going on loan to Southampton,” Baggies’ boss Robson revealed.
"Chappy is learning and coming on as player but I think he now needs a run
of first-team games because he's been in and out here. Players get the
chance to put into practice the things they've learnt on the training pitch
when they're playing week in, week out."
Ex-Burnley
star Chaplow has struggled to make any impression at The Hawthorns this
season and has started just six league and cup games.
Horsfield on way
but AJ stays
Striker Geoff Horsfield looks set to move to Championship
side Sheffield United once Kanu and Diomansy Kamara return from African
Nations Cup duty, Albion boss Bryan Robson has
confirmed.
"Once the lads come back from the African Nations Cup Geoff
could go to Sheffield United on loan or permanently," Robson told the club’s
official website. "He wants first-team football and a move back up north
would suit him. When a player desires first-team football that's what you
have to look at.”
The Baggies'
boss has however revealed that midfielder Andy Johnson will be staying at
The Hawthorns for now despite reportedly telling the former Wales
international that he was free to look for another club. The player, whose
contract runs out in June, has recently been linked with moves to a number
of clubs with Nottingham Forest, Leeds United, Coventry City and Bristol
Rovers all said to be interested in signing the 31 year-old.
Reserve clash rearranged
Albion's
postponed reserve league game away at Liverpool is rearranged for Thursday,
April 13 with a 7:00pm kick-off time.

Robson admits
England interest
Baggies’ boss Bryan Robson admits that he would be interested
in taking over as
England manager when Sven Goran Eriksson quits in the summer. Robson, who
won 90 caps for his country has been touted as a possible successor by
Eriksson himself.
"If the FA want to speak to me, I'd seriously consider it,"
Robson told the Daily Express.
“I now feel I have the experience after nine years of
management. I've also had the benefit of working with Terry Venables when he
was England
coach."
"Sven has mentioned me - and I am sure Sir Alex Ferguson would
provide a reference too."
Friday 27th January 2006
Dyer
off to The Lions
Albion midfielder Lloyd Dyer
joins Championship side Millwall on a free transfer. The 23 year-old has
struggled to impress Baggies’ boss Bryan Robson and has made just one
substitute appearance for the first team this season. The
players' contract was due to expire in the summer.
The
Birmingham
born player joined Albion in the summer of 2000 after being released by his
boyhood heroes Aston Villa but it wasn’t until the 2003/04 season that he
finally made a name for himself. With Albion pushing for a return to the
Premiership the pacey star put in a number of super-sub appearances,
contributing as much as anyone in firing the club back into the top-flight.
Dyer started only one game last season - the club's Carling
Cup defeat at
Colchester whilst his only
Albion appearance this term came as a substitute in the FA Cup replay
defeat at Reading.
During his time at The Hawthorns
Dyer made made 25 appearances for
Albion, including
21 as sub, and scored
two goals. He also enjoyed successful spells on loan at Kidderminster
Harriers, Coventry City and Queens Park
Rangers.
Should Millwall sell Dyer in the future,
Albion will receive 50 per
cent of any transfer fee.
Earnshaw linked with Canaries move
Albion’s want-away striker
Rob Earnshaw is linked with a move to
Norwich
City. The Championship club are looking for a replacement for Dean Ashton
whom they sold to West Ham United earlier in the week.
Norwich boss Nigel
Worthington admitted his interest in the Welsh international but fears
Albion’s asking price may rule out the possibility of a move.
Albion are reportedly hoping to recoup as much of the £3.6 million
they paid Cardiff City
for the striker in August 2004.
The Canaries boss said: "We have made a phone call to
West Brom and the price for
Earnshaw is too steep for us. They would have to drop the price for anything
to possibly happen. We couldn't afford the price
West Brom are asking. Simple as that.”
"Are people taking advantage of
Norwich having money after
Dean Ashton's sale? I don't know if that is the case. Can something still be
sorted out? I haven't got a clue. If they were to drop the price, then they
could give us a call."
Worthington added: "Earnshaw
is a player we like a lot. He is quick, he has got an eye for goal and he is
a character. If something could be done to bring him to Norwich City, it
would be great. But what Albion are asking is a step too far for us.”
"We do want to get someone in, but at the right price, and
that is very important. That is the way the club is run. We will just have
to wait and see what happens."
Horsfield to become a Blade?
Reports suggest that
Albion striker Geoff
Horsfield could be set for a move to Championship promotion chasers
Sheffield United. The player has been strongly linked with a move to
Yorkshire in recent weeks and it now appears that the move will
go ahead as soon as Diomansy Kamara and Kanu return from African Nations Cup
duty. It is claimed he will initially move to
Bramall Lane on loan with a
view to a permanent transfer in the summer.
Quashie
tipped to move
Albion are reported to be
stepping up their efforts to sign
Southampton midfielder Nigel Quashie. The
Scotland international moved
to the Saints from Portsmouth 12 months ago in a £2.1 million deal but now
looks set to make a return to The Premiership with Albion, Middlesbrough and
former club Portsmouth all said to be interested in the player.
Polish star linked
Albion are linked with
Polish midfielder Radoslaw Sobolewski. The Poland international, currently
playing for Wisla Krakow in his homeland has reportedly been watched by a
number of English clubs’ scouts.
"There was interest from Premiership clubs,
West Brom went to watch him
and Arsenal took a look too," the player’s English representative Mel Eves
told skysports.com.
"Arsenal flew out and saw him on a number of occasions but
ultimately decided not to go for him.
Southampton have been
interested for a while and were most serious about him. George Burley likes
him, but Wisla Krakow want to keep hold of him and have been unwilling to do
business. The player himself was keen on a move to
Southampton with the Polish links already there, but there was not much he could do
as the club didn't want to sell.”
"I think it reached its peak last week and I'd be very
surprised if anything happens before the deadline now."
Mixed
fortunes for Baggies’ pair
Albion duo Kanu and Diomansy
Kamara experience mixed fortunes during the second round of group matches in
the African Nations Cup.
Nigerian star Kanu came on as a 54th minute substitute
against Zimbabwe to help his country to a 2-0 victory whilst in the day’s
other Group D match Albion winger Kamara came on as a substitute for Senegal
in their 1-0 defeat to Ghana.

‘Big
Dave’ departs
Albion defender Darren
Moore leaves the club, joining Championship side Derby County for a fee that
could rise to £500,000. The 31-year-old has signed a three-and-a-half-year
contract at Pride Park.
Moore moved to Albion in
September 2001 from Portsmouth for a fee of £750,000 and during his time at
The Hawthorns he helped the club gain promotion to the Premiership twice in
the space of three seasons. He was also named in the PFA’s Division One Team
of the Year for the 2001/02 season.
In April last year,
Handsworth born Moore signed a two year contract extension but has since
found his first team opportunities limited with Neil Clement and Curtis
Davies forming a useful partnership in the centre of defence.
Albion boss Bryan Robson
said of the move: "Derby
have given us a good offer for Darren. At the age Darren is now we feel it
is a good move for him at this stage of his career. He wants to be playing
first-team football and because of the way Curtis Davies and Neil Clement
have developed such an understanding in the back four we feel this is best
for Darren. He's been a great servant to West Brom and we wish him
all the best."
Baggies chairman Jeremy
Peace added: "Darren has been a tremendous ambassador for the club both on
and off the pitch since he joined us over four years ago. He has been
unstinting in his support of the club in its dealings with the local
community and on that front he leaves a big hole to fill. However, he
realises he has been offered a great opportunity at Derby and we wish him
every success for the future. We hope he maintains contact with the club and
the important thing is that everyone is a winner in this deal."
Moore himself admitted
his sadness at leaving the club after four and a half years. "I had a
wonderful time at West Bromwich Albion and I thank everyone there for the
great opportunities and times they gave me,” he told the Rams official
website.
"'I'm a little bit
saddened to leave because I made a lot of good friends there but now it is a
different chapter for me and I am delighted to be here. I can't wait to get
started, I'm looking forward to training and working alongside my new
team-mates."
Moore's last game for the
club came at Wigan 11 days ago, a game in which he received the only red
card of his Albion
career.
The big defender made 116
appearances, including 11 as a substitute for Albion, scoring six
times.
Greening battling hernia problem
Baggies’ midfielder
Jonathan Greening admits he is playing through the pain barrier in his
efforts to help
Albion avoid the drop. The 27-year-old former Middlesbrough star is hoping
to avoid having an operation until the end of the season.
"I'm struggling at the
moment because I've got a hernia," Greening told the club’s official
website. "The hernia is getting worse after every game but I'll just keep on
playing until I can hardly run anymore. I've had it a while now and it's
just getting more and more sore. But if I can keep my base fitness up and
keep doing my weights I should be able to hold off an op until the end of
the season. I'm just crossing my fingers I can do that.”
“It doesn't affect me
during games really, it's mainly afterwards when it stiffens up. It feels
fine at the moment and I'll just go on the physio's advice - but it will
require an operation eventually.”
"Zoltan and Thomas have
both had hernias as well this season - it must be something in the water!"
Johnson
set to leave?
Albion midfielder Andy
Johnson looks set to leave The Hawthorns before the end of the January
transfer window according to his agent Gary Porter. "We are talking to a
number of clubs. Bristol Rovers are one of them and they are obviously a big
draw for Andy because he supported them as a young lad,” Porter revealed.
"There are other clubs in the equation and Andy is deciding what will be his
best move, although he may still decide to remain with Albion."
Johnson, whose contract expires in the summer has been told
by Baggies’ boss Bryan Robson that he is free to leave the club.

Kozak
keen to extend stay
Albion’s new signing Jan
Kozak reveals that he is determined to impress sufficiently enough to turn
his six month loan move from
Artmedia Bratislava into a permanent one.
The Slovakia star, who today
received international clearance for the move, told the club’s official
website: "I'm very happy to have signed for West Brom
and I will be working hard to try and get into the first team. I want to
stay at West Brom
beyond this season and help the club achieve their ambitions. I am convinced
that the team and the club are good enough to stay in the Premier League."

Reserves draw
A Rob Earnshaw goal earns
a youthful Albion
reserve side a point from a 1-1 draw with Middlesbrough at Billingham.
Welsh striker Earnshaw
opened the scoring in the 27th minute, heading home a Lloyd Dyer cross from
close range. The visitors’ lead lasted until the 70 minute mark when 16
year-old Boro trialist Tom Watson equalised with a smart chip over Luke
Daniels in the Baggies’ goal.
Kozak seals Hawthorns switch
Albion complete their
first signing of the January transfer window with Artmedia Bratislava
midfielder Jan Kozak joining on loan until the end of the season with a view
to a permanent move. The Slovakia international impressed Baggies’ boss
Bryan Robson during a week's trial earlier this month. The club are now
awaiting international clearance to field the 25-year-old.
Robson, speaking about
his new signing said: "I was really impressed with Jan when I saw his
performances in the Champions League against Porto and Rangers. We had
him watched and then brought him over for a few days to take a look at him
in training.”
"Jan is an attacking
central midfielder. He is very skillful and can create and score goals.
Hopefully, he will bring those attributes into the club."
Boss
blasts boo boys
Albion boss Bryan Robson
hits out at the supporters that booed Darren Carter during Saturday’s game
with Sunderland. The ex-Birmingham midfielder has struggled to impress this
season and has produced a number of dreadful performances but Robson stood
by his player and criticised the disgruntled fans.
"It was a small section
of fans who booed Darren and a lot of supporters tried to over-ride them by
cheering for Darren. I said it before when it happened to Ronnie Wallwork,
that you support your team. I can't believe that they would boo their own
players. That is twice now that a minority of fans have booed good, honest
players so they have got to have a look at themselves. If you want success
within the club, everyone has to pull together."
Robson added: "Darren Carter's work-rate has been excellent in the last few
games and, like Curtis Davies, he is getting better in terms of being
confident and a good talker. He is communicating a lot more. He gets angry
if we lose because he doesn't want to get beat and we saw that at Reading as well in the FA
Cup last week. That's the sort of character I want these young lads to
build. I don't want them to not be bothered when they get beaten."
Albion linked with Spanish star
Albion are linked with a
move for Real Betis midfielder Arzu. Scouts representing the club have
reportedly watched the player in action against Celta Vigo and Atletico
Madrid in recent weeks.
Arzu, 25, has made over
100 top flight appearances for Betis and is also said to be a target for Albion’s
Premiership rivals Manchester City.
Horsfield linked with Blades move
Albion striker
Geoff Horsfield is linked with a £1.2 million move to Championship side
Sheffield United. Blades' boss Neil Warnock is reportedly set to make a move
for the 32 year-old after seeing moves for Ade Akinbiyi and Kenny Miller
both collapse.
Horsfield, who
moved to The Hawthorns from Wigan in December 2003 has started just eight
games so far this season.
Monday 23rd January 2006
Duo on African Cup duty
Albion's Nigerian striker Kanu makes his
return from injury to help his country to a 1-0 win over Ghana in their
opening African Nations Cup group match. Kanu,
who had been sidelined with a fracture to the side of his head, came off
the bench with ten minutes left and set up Taiye Taiwo for an 85th minute
winner.
The Baggies’
other representative at the tournament, Senegal’s Diomansy Kamara, started
for his country in their 2-0 win over Zimbabwe. Goals from Wigan's Henri
Camara (59) and Issa Ba (80) were enough to hand the ‘Lions of Teranga’
victory.
Sunshine trip for Baggies?
Albion boss Bryan Robson
admits he is considering a repeat of last season’s winter break
when he took his team to Florida for a few days.
Robson said: "We'll assess what we feel is best to prepare the players but I
don't think a break is such a bad idea. I'm going to have a look at it and
it's a case of either topping up players who have been injured with a bit of
extra training or having a break which will do them good. We've got to
assess the situation."

Dismal Albion slump to Black Cats
A Steve Watson own goal
is enough to condemn Albion to an
embarrassing 1-0 defeat against bottom of the table Sunderland
at The Hawthorns. In a very poor game of very few chances the visitors
took the lead on 72 minutes when Anthony Le Tallec’s weak shot deflected
off ex-Newcastle star Watson and past the stranded Tomasz Kuszczak into
the back of the net. The victory for Sunderland,
only their second league win of the season, was
watched by a crowd of 26,464.
Academy
team lose to Potters
Albion’s Academy team
slump to a third successive defeat with a 1-0 loss away at Stoke City.
Potters' captain Adam Vass scored the only goal of
the game with a 25 yard strike.

Kozak set to sign?
Artmedia Bratislava
midfielder Jan Kozak is set to move to The Hawthorns on a six month loan
deal according to his club’s manager Petr Kaspar. The 25 year-old
playmaker will fly to England on Sunday to
finalise the details of his contract before becoming an Albion
player on Monday or Tuesday, Kaspar revealed to Reuters.
Kozak, who recently spent
a trial spell with Albion, has previously
played for Slovakian sides Lokomotiva Kosice and FC Kosice, Lokeren in
Belgium and Czech side Slavia Prague.

Double defensive boost for Robson
Baggies’ boss Bryan Robson is handed a boost ahead of
Saturday’s crunch match against
Sunderland with the news that defender Neil Clement will be fit for The
Hawthorns clash. Clement has missed the last three games after suffering a
fracture to the side of his head in the derby game
with Aston Villa.
Darren Moore will also return to the squad after missing
Tuesday’s game with
Reading
after serving a one match ban for his sending-off at
Wigan.
Doubts do remain however over the fitness of Geoff Horsfield,
Steve Watson, Kevin Campbell and Paul Robinson who all missed
Albion’s FA Cup defeat at
Reading, whilst Kanu, Zoltan Gera, Thomas Gaardsoe and
Diomansy Kamara are all definitely missing.

Ugo deal dead
Albion's
move for Middlesbrough defender Ugo Ehiogu is called off after the club
failed to agree personal terms with the player. The 33 year-old former
England star had been set to move to The Hawthorns on an 18 month deal.
Baggies’ chairman
Jeremy Peace told his club’s official website: "We've done everything we
can to make this deal happen but it's just not possible. The goalposts
keep being moved and enough is enough. I'll be speaking
to Bryan Robson to discuss alternative targets should he wish to pursue
them."
Earlier in
the day, Albion boss Robson had claimed a deal to sign Ehiogu, who started
his career at The Hawthorns, was close.
Baggies linked with Leeds swap deal
Albion are
linked with a swap deal involving midfielder Jason Koumas and Leeds United
striker David Healy. Wales midfielder Koumas is currently on a season-long
loan deal at Cardiff City and has expressed a wish to leave The Hawthorns
permanently but the Welsh club are reportedly unable to meet Albion's
asking price, meaning that other clubs could now make a move for the star.
Northern Ireland striker Healy has hit ten goals for the Elland Road club
this season but has still struggled to claim a regular starting place.

Albion's FA Cup dreams over
A Leroy Lita
hat-trick sends Albion crashing out of the FA Cup at the Madejski Stadium. A
youthful Baggies' side had taken a two goal lead thanks to two goals from
midfielder Richard Chaplow - in the 9th and 31st minutes, but a second half double
from former Bristol City striker Lita - on 50 and 65 minutes, took the tie
into extra-time. With Albion struggling to contain the Championship
leaders, Lita scored his third and the decisive goal three minutes into
extra-time. The game, watched by a crowd of 16,737, saw the first team
debuts of Jared Hodgkiss, Rob Davies and Stuart Nicholson.
Scimeca completes Bluebirds move
Albion utility player
Riccardo Scimeca completes his free transfer to Championship side Cardiff
City.
The Leamington born star,
who has penned a two and a half year deal, initially moved to Ninian Park on
Friday in an emergency loan deal which enabled him to make his debut
for City in their weekend game against Burnley.
Scimeca, 30, moved to The
Hawthorns in May 2004 from Leicester City and made 40 appearances for the
Baggies, seven of those as substitute.
Academy trio handed deals
The club reveal that Academy trio Jeff Forsyth, Jared
Hodgkiss and Stuart Nicholson have all signed professional contracts.
Third year scholars; Hodgkiss, a 19 year-old right-back and
Nicholson, an 18 year-old striker join second year scholar Forsyth, an 18
year old central defender in Albion’s professional ranks.
All three
players have been reserve team regulars this season.
Monday 16th January 2006
Kozak set to join?
Artmedia Bratislava midfielder Jan Kozak has claimed that
Albion are set to
make a move for him following his recent trial spell at The Hawthorns.
The 25 year-old Slovak international told the profutbal
website: "I have a good feeling from my test in
West Bromwich. Coach Robson
called me away to him after four days of training and he said he wants me in
his team. I went through medical tests and I saw the stadium of West
Bromwich during my stay there."
Kozak’s club manager Petr Kaspar also claimed a deal could be imminent.
"West Bromwich still has an interest in him so we wait for their offer in
the next few days. Everything should be decided by Wednesday."

Albion claim vital win at the JJB
Martin
Albrechtsen's first goal for the club sees ten man Albion claim a 1-0 win
against Wigan Athletic at the JJB Stadium. The Baggies had Darren Moore
sent off two minutes before half time for two bookable offences but still
managed to take a 56th minute lead with a neat finish from Danish defender
Albrechtsen. The three points were made safe in injury time when keeper
Tomasz Kuszczak pulled off the save of the season to deny Albion old boy
Jason Roberts from two yards out. A crowd of 17,421 were in attendance.
Duo receive bans
Albion duo Ronnie Wallwork
and Darren Moore will both have to serve one game suspensions after picking
up cards during the game at
Wigan.
Wallwork received his fifth yellow card of the season and
will serve a one-match suspension - either
Albion's FA Cup fourth-round
tie - should they beat
Reading in Tuesday's replay - or the Barclays Premiership trip to
Charlton on January 31.
Moore meanwhile receives an
automatic one-game ban after being sent-off for two bookable offences at the
JJB. He will miss Tuesday night’s FA Cup replay.
Another Ugo snag?
It is reported that
Albion’s efforts to sign
Middlesbrough defender Ugo Ehiogu have hit another snag with the Baggies
apparently unaware that the former England international still had
18 months left to run on his Boro contract. Boss Bryan Robson is now said
to be considering a loan move for the defender with the option of a
permanent move being made in the summer.
Reading duo targeted?
Morning
newspaper reports claim that Bryan Robson could be set to move for
Reading's highly rated duo of Steve Sidwell and Dave Kitson.

Leamington born star to play in City's game against
Burnley tomorrow, after
which the deal will be made permanent.
Scimeca, 30, moved to The Hawthorns in May 2004 from
Leicester City and made 40
appearances for the Baggies, seven of those as
substitute. In recent weeks the player has been linked
with a number of clubs including Nottingham Forest, Derby and Sunderland,
but has instead opted for a move to Ninian Park, where he will link up with
two former
Albion team mates - Darren Purse and Jason Koumas.
Albion boss Bryan Robson said of
the move: "Riccy's got himself a club that is looking to give him a
longer-term contract and the chance of first-team football. I'm sure he'll
be very happy with that."
Bluebirds’ boss Dave Jones also expressed his
delight at the deal: "Really pleased to have Riccy he is a good singing. We
have been chasing him for a long time but like most transfers you have to
strike at the right moment. We have attracted another quality player and
Riccy will be a massive addition to the squad. We are running with a small
squad but again this is another example of quality not quantity."
Ugo talks continue
Bryan Robson reveals talks are ongoing over
Middlesbrough defender Ugo
Ehiogu’s transfer to The Hawthorns. Negotiations between the two parties
will continue over the weekend with the Baggies' boss
hopeful the deal will be completed on Monday.
"There are a couple of hitches that are holding the deal up.
Hopefully, they'll be resolved over the weekend and by Monday, Ugo will be a
West Brom player,”
said Robson.
"Because of injuries to defenders at
Middlesbrough, it has been
an on-off deal. That delayed things and then, because of these hitches, we
were prevented from getting it done by noon today, otherwise Ugo would have
been in the squad for
Wigan.”
"There is still a bit of work to be done. There are all sorts
of different hitches that can develop in transfers. That's why it can't
always be smooth when you try to sign a player.”
"The reason I'm trying to sign Ugo is because he has vast
experience and is a big stronger defender who loves to defend. I'm hoping
some of that will rub off on my players."
Reserve clash postponed
Albion’s reserve game at
Liverpool on Monday, January 16 is postponed due to the club’s FA Cup replay
at Reading the following night. A new date has yet to be arranged.

Ugo
move back on
Middlesbrough defender Ugo
Ehiogu’s move to Albion is back on after Boro boss Steve McLaren backtracked
on a decision to block the transfer. The 33 year-old star looked set to move
to The Hawthorns after agreeing personal terms and passing a medical but the
deal was thrown into doubt after Boro captain Gareth Southgate suffered a
suspected broken ankle resulting in Ehiogu being recalled to the Riverside
Stadium.
Thankfully for Albion Southgate’s injury
has turned out not as bad as first feared meaning that Boro will now
allow the big defender to return to the club where he started his career
back in the early 1990’s.
"We were very concerned with
the serious possibility that Gareth had a stress fracture to his ankle,"
Boro manager McLaren said. "Clearly, if Gareth had joined Franck Queudrue as
long-term injured, it would not have been in the club's best interests to
allow Ugo to move on. Thankfully, Gareth's injury doesn't appear to be as
serious as first feared. Scans have been taken that do not suggest a
fracture. That's clearly great news as I don't need to spell out how
important Gareth is to the team. Gareth will rest for the next week, maybe
two, and the ankle will be assessed on an ongoing basis. As long as the
injury settles down, we will have him back fairly soon. The knock-on effect
is that we have now decided to let Ugo's transfer to West Brom go through as
originally planned."
"It was right for us to be
cautious and put the transfer on hold when there was concern that Gareth
could be out for an extended period, as we had to do what was right for
Middlesbrough,” McLaren continued. “Now we feel it's best for the club and
for Ugo that he moves on to pastures new. He has been an outstanding servant
to this club over the past four or five years and should be remembered
fondly by fans for his part in winning the Carling Cup. But I have explained
to him that I can't guarantee him the first-team football he naturally wants
at this stage in his career. We have some excellent young players coming
through and we want to ensure they fulfill their potential."
Wigan linked with Earnie
Wigan Athletic
are the latest club to be linked with a move for Albion striker Rob Earnshaw.
The Welsh star, who has made it clear he wishes to leave The Hawthorns after
falling out of the first team picture, has already been linked with
Birmingham City, Portsmouth, Everton, Southampton and Crystal Palace.

Ugo no-go
Middlesbrough defender Ugo
Ehiogu’s move to The Hawthorns appears to collapse. The 33-year-old former
England international was set to complete the deal after agreeing personal
terms and completing a medical but has now been forced to return to the
Riverside after an ankle injury to Gareth Southgate left Boro short of
defensive options.
Ehiogu’s agent Steve Kutner has admitted to skysports.com
that his client is not happy at the prospect of going back to The Riverside.
"He does not want to go back to
Middlesbrough, despite what might have happened. In his head, he is
a West Brom player
and was gearing up to play for them this weekend. He has accepted the fact
he was leaving Middlesbrough, and that would be very difficult for him to
change now. As far as we are concerned and as it
stands now he is still going to West Brom, which is what he wants."
Hasselbaink deal rebuffed
Albion are
believed to have been told by Middlesbrough that striker Jimmy Floyd
Hasselbaink is not for sale. The Baggies were reportedly set to make
Hasselbaink the club's highest paid player ever but with Boro only just
above the Premiership relegation-zone themselves they are unwilling to let
the player leave.
New reserve date announced
Albion’s postponed reserve team home game with Leeds United
is rearranged for Wednesday, February 1, kick-off 7pm, at Kidderminster
Harriers' Aggborough stadium.

Albion suffer Kanu blow
Albion suffer a blow with the news that Kanu will miss next
Sunday’s Premiership game at Wigan after suffering a depressed fracture to
the side of his head during Saturday's FA Cup draw with Reading.
The Nigerian star will be sidelined for two-three weeks and
now faces a race against time to take part in the upcoming African Nations
Cup.
"I feel a little bit sorry for the
Nigeria officials because
they have been very fair to us," said Baggies’ boss Bryan Robson. "It's
unusual for an international team to be as flexible as they have been and,
unfortunately for them and for us, Kanu has suffered this injury.”
“I just want to thank the Nigeria FA and their manager for
being so fair to us and allowing him to stay. We will always try to be fair
with them in the future."
Moore vows to remain a Baggie
Albion club captain Darren
Moore vows to stay and fight for a place at The Hawthorns despite reports
linking him with a move away from the club. With
Middlesbrough defender Ugo Ehiogu looking set to join Bryan Robson’s
men shortly, the big defender looks set to drop
even further down the Hawthorns defensive pecking order.
Moore though is determined
to stay and fight for a first team place. "There has been a lot of transfer
speculation surrounding me but I love
West Brom. Everyone knows that and I have still got 18 months
left on my contract here with possibly a year's option."
"My main aim here is to help
West Brom stay in the
Premier League for a second season. I am not even looking away from the
club. I am fully 100 per cent committed with the rest of the guys here. I
want to stay at the club and to continue to try to force my way into the
team. I am training hard and trying hard to push Neil Clement, Curtis Davies
and anyone else for a place. The competition is fierce but I would not have
it any other way and it pushes me as a player and it means if I am getting
pushed as a player, then I am improving as a player."
Earnie
in Saints swop deal link
According to reports
Southampton boss George
Burley has offered midfield duo Nigel Quashie and David Prutton as part of a
£4million swop deal in an attempt to sign Albion
striker Rob Earnshaw. The deal, proposed by the Saints would see
Albion pay £1million plus Welsh striker Earnshaw in exchange for
the midfield duo.
Baggies’ boss Bryan Robson has already reportedly shown an
interest in ex-QPR midfielder Quashie with some
reports suggesting that
Albion midfielder Richard
Chaplow could move to the south coast in exchange.
Scimeca Black Cats link denied
Albion defender Riccardo
Scimeca’s representative Kevin Moran denies reports claiming that
Premiership strugglers Sunderland were leading the race for the
player’s signature.
"There is no truth in that," Moran told skysports.com of the
Sunderland link. "I
am talking to some clubs and there are some Championship clubs who have
expressed an interest."
Scimeca, who moved to Albion from
Leicester City in May 2004, has been given permission to talk to
other clubs after falling out of favour at The Hawthorns.

Reserves crash in local derby
A youthful reserve side crash to a 3-0 defeat against
Black Country rivals Wolves
at Aggborough, Kidderminster. Carl Cort opened the scoring for the visitors
on 51 minutes before a Lloyd Dyer own goal doubled their lead ten minutes
later. Romanian striker Vio Ganea completed the scoring on 72 minutes with a
penalty following a Lee Baker handball. A crowd of 440 watched the Baggies
slip to a fifth defeat in six games.
Ugo deal close
Baggies' boss
Bryan Robson reveals Middlesbrough defender Ugo Ehiogu is close to sealing a
return to The Hawthorns.
"We're so far down the line with big Ugo and there are only a
few minor details to try and tie up. Hopefully, by tomorrow,
he'll be a
West Brom player," said Robson.
"He's a big strong
defender who has vast experience of Premiership football. He is an out and
out defender who will improve our squad. I think Ugo will be good for Curtis
and Clem with the experience he has. He is also a good communicator on the
pitch."
Cup derby on cards
In the FA Cup fourth round draw
Albion are handed a home tie
against either Birmingham City or Torquay United if they dispose of Reading
in their third round replay. The game would take place on the weekend of the 28th/29th
January.
International duo in on trial
Charleroi
defender Badou Kere and Artmedia Bratislava midfielder Jan Kozak both check
in at The Hawthorns for week long trials.
Kere spent a short period on
trial at the club before Christmas and Albion boss Bryan Robson was
sufficiently impressed to offer the Burkina Faso international another
chance to stake a claim for a permanent deal.
Slovakia
international Kozak, 25, has been in impressive form so far this season and
caught the eye in Champions League action against the likes of Inter Milan,
Porto and Rangers.
Duo set
to depart?
Baggies’ boss Bryan Robson reveals that Riccardo Scimeca and
Andy Johnson could soon be leaving The Hawthorns after being granted
permission to speak to other clubs. Both players have hardly figured in the
Albion first team
this season and now look set to leave during the January transfer window.
“Andy and Riccy are talking to clubs," Robson confirmed.
“With Andy and Riccy being the age they are, they need first-team football
and should be enjoying their football. They're not really getting a chance
with me and that's why I have allowed them to speak to other clubs."
Earnshaw in Eagles link
Crystal Palace
are linked with a move for Albion’s wantaway striker Rob Earnshaw. Palace
director of
football Bob Dowie is reported to have travelled to The Hawthorns on
Saturday to watch the Baggies’ game with Reading only for the Welsh star not
to figure.
Sunday 8th January 2006
Earnshaw
transfer probe mystery
It is revealed that
Albion striker Rob
Earnshaw has wrote to the Football Association urging an inquiry into his
transfer from Cardiff City to The Hawthorns in August 2004. Earnshaw
contacted the FA in October of that same year requesting that it
investigate the circumstances of the transfer, raising concerns over the
identity of agents involved in the deal and to whom fees were paid.
Inquiries conducted by the FA's compliance unit were
inconclusive but the evidence was handed to Fifa due to the international
status of the transfer.
In his letter, addressed to the FA's director of Football
Administration Graham Noakes, Earnshaw describes in detail the final
meetings and phone calls between agents and club representatives as the deal
was hammered out. In it he asks Noakes to discover
who officially represented him in the transfer, what the exact transfer fee
was and how much of the fee went on agents' fees, consultancy fees, finder's
fees or retainers. He also enquired as to whom made money out of the
transfer.
Albion quickly issued a
statement denying any wrong-doing in the transfer but did
admit an administrative error had been made during the final stages of the
deal, when a witness inadvertently filled in a wrong section in the official
contracts. A club
spokesman said: "Although this was amended in manuscript immediately, and
before the forms were submitted, the FA decided to investigate since the
witness involved was an agent.
The club fully co-operated with the FA's enquiries and the FA
has since contacted the club by letter, stating: ‘There is no allegation of
misconduct on behalf of West Bromwich Albion Football Club or its officers.'
The club has been exonerated by the FA and as far as the club is aware,
Earnshaw's transfer was negotiated in a proper manner. Anything else is a
matter between Rob and his agents, both former and present."
Hasselbaink
the next Boro star in?
Newspaper
reports suggest Albion are set to make an audacious move for Middlesbrough
striker Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink. The former Chelsea star has found himself
behind Mark Viduka and Yakubu in the striking pecking order at the Riverside Stadium and Boro boss Steve
McClaren is reportedly ready to allow him to leave the club.
Hasselbaink, who celebrates
his 34th birthday in March, has scored five goals so far
this season.
Leeds
star linked
Albion are linked with a
move for Leeds United midfielder Eirik Bakke - the Norwegian international
currently on loan at Aston Villa. The Birmingham
club’s manager David O'Leary is said to be keen on making the deal permanent
but with United rumoured to be keen on Baggies’ midfielder Andy Johnson a swap
deal is rumoured to be a possibility.
Johnson linked with Ipswich move
Championship
club Ipswich Town are the latest side to be linked with a move for Albion
midfielder Andy Johnson.

Lucky Albion face replay
Albion
scrape a 1-1 draw in their FA Cup 3rd round clash with Reading at The
Hawthorns. In a dire game of few chances the hosts took the lead on 82
minutes when Zoltan Gera cooly converted from the penalty spot following a
foul on Geoff Horsfield. The Baggies' lead lasted just two minutes before
the Royals themselves were handed a penalty following a handball by Martin
Albrechtsen - Kevin Doyle easily converting the spot-kick. A crowd of
19,197 were in attendance on a bitterly cold West Bromwich day.
The replay
will take place at the Madejski Stadium on Tuesday, January 17 with a 8pm
kick-off time.
County in for Scimeca?
Championship side
Derby County admit having an
interest in Albion utilty player Riccardo Scimeca.
Derby manager Phil Brown said: "Riccardo is a player we would be interested
in because he would improve the squad. He is available and his time at West
Brom appears to be at an end. Riccardo can also play in a number of
positions, which in a small squad can be important. I like players who can
play two or three positions."
Academy side lose eight
goal thriller
Albion’s Academy side go
down to a 5-3 defeat in an eight goal thriller at Liverpool.
The Reds opened the scoring on five minutes through Charlie Barnett before
Baggies’ defender Jeff Forsyth squared the game just two minutes later.
Stuart Nicholson then put the visitors ahead only for Paul Barrett to
equalise almost immediately. Two goals in the space of two minutes from
Stephen Darby and James Frayne gave Pool a 4-2 advantage before Nicholson
netted again to make it 4-3 at half-time. Despite the Baggies having a
number of chances to level the game it was the hosts that grabbed the next
goal through Conal Platt, in the process making sure of all three points.
Thursday 5th January 2006
Johnson linked with Rovers move
Baggies'
midfielder Andy Johnson is linked with a move to his boyhood club Bristol
Rovers. Johnson, who has been declared surplus to requirements at The
Hawthorns has also recently been linked with moves to Coventry City,
Nottingham Forest and Leeds United.
The former
Welsh international has already reportedly held talks with Rovers and
refused to rule out a return to his native City.
Johnson told the Express & Star: "Playing for Rovers is
something I've always wanted to do. It's something I always hoped would
happen towards the end of my career. I still feel I can play at a much
higher level than that but it is another option open to me. If we can sort
out a deal then it's something I would definitely consider, but it's still
got to be right for me and my family."
"There is a big pull there for me to play for the club I
supported as a boy. I was there to watch them last week but I often go to
the games when I have the chance. My brother's goes all the time as well.
It's one of the options I'll be considering over the next couple of
weeks."
Earnie up for sale?
Bryan Robson admits for the first time that out of favour
striker Rob Earnshaw could be sold if the right
offer comes along. The Welsh star has already had two transfer requests
turned down but Baggies’ boss Robson told Sky Sports: "If an offer comes in
that's acceptable to the club and to me as manager then we'll have to look
at that, but at the moment we haven't had any bids for Rob.”
"Rob's been unsettled but I've said to him he's got to improve
certain aspects of his game. If he does that and gets his chance in the
coming month we'll have to take it from there."
Slovak star linked
Albion are rumoured to have
handed a trial to Artmedia Bratislava midfielder Jan Kozak. According to
reports, the 25 year-old Slovakian international midfielder is said to be
preparing himself for a Hawthorns trial. Baggies’
boss Bryan Robson however insisted that no such
deal had yet been finalised. "Nothing is done
yet," Robson told skysports.com. "We have watched him and tracked his
progress, but that is it at the moment and we will have to wait and see."
Birmingham Cup tie date announced
Albion’s postponed
third-round Birmingham Senior Cup tie away at Moor Green
is rearranged for Saturday, January 14 with a 3pm

ground.
Wednesday 4th January 2006
Albion rebuff Koumas cup bid
Albion refuse Cardiff
City permission to play on-loan midfielder Jason Koumas in their FA Cup
clash at Arsenal on Saturday. With the Baggies willing to part with the
Welsh star should their valuation of the player be met they are unwilling to
allow him to become cup-tied. The former Tranmere
midfielder is currently on a season-long loan deal at Ninian Park
and the Bluebirds do have first option on signing the player permanently -
providing they pay a fee agreed with Albion last summer.
Albion chairman Jeremy
Peace told the club’s official website: "We're more than happy to sell Jason
to Cardiff in line with the terms of the deal we agreed with them in the
summer. Jason would then be free to play for them in the FA Cup. Until such
an agreement has been reached with Cardiff, we will not grant him permission
to play in the competition. Should another club be
prepared to pay the same price for Jason, we will then be happy to discuss a
deal with them. This would allow Jason to play for them in the FA Cup should
they remain in the competition."
Megson set for double swoop?
Former
Baggies' boss Gary Megson is rumoured to be interested in a move for out
of favour Albion duo Darren Moore and Andy Johnson. With a central
defender looking likely to arrive at The Hawthorns during the January
transfer window Moore looks set to slip even further down the defensive
pecking order.
Midfielder
Johnson has also found himself out of favour at The Hawthorns - his last
league appearance coming against Charlton in September.
Tuesday 3rd January 2006
Albion hoping for Kanu delay
Baggies’ boss Bryan Robson reveals he is attempting to persuade the
Nigerian FA to allow Kanu to delay his departure to the African Nations
Cup. Having already lost Diomansy Kamara
to the competition, Robson is hoping that Kanu
will be given special dispensation to figure in the FA Cup clash against Reading
and the Premiership tie at Wigan Athletic.
"We're talking to the Nigerian FA about Kanu this week and we will keep
talking,” said Robson. Hopefully, we'll still have him for the next two
games. But that was Kamara's last game for us as he goes to the African
Nations Cup today."
Reserve date announced
Albion’s postponed reserve trip to Liverpool is rearranged for Monday,
January 16, kick-off 7pm.
Monday 2nd January 2006
Albion slump in lunchtime derby clash
A Milan
Baros penalty ten minutes from time condemns Albion to a fourth defeat in
five games. Villa, who were the better team throughout, took the lead
through a Stephen Davis header in the 47th minute only to see Steve Watson
equalise on 76 minutes with his first goal for the club. Albion's joy was
short lived however and with 80 minutes on the clock Watson was adjudged
to have handled the ball in the box; Baros cooly converting the spot-kick
to give Villa all three points. A crowd of 27,073 were in attendance.
Ugo to return?
Albion are reported to
be ready to make a move for Middlesbrough defender Ugo Ehiogu. The 33
year-old is currently out of favour at the Riverside Stadium after
suffering a number of niggling injuries and Boro boss Steve McClaren is
said to be willing to allow him to leave.
The former England defender started
his playing career at The Hawthorns but made only 2 appearances before
leaving to join Aston Villa in 1991. He spent nine years at Villa Park
before current Baggies’ boss Bryan Robson paid £8million to take him to Middlesbrough.
Sunday 1st January 2006
Plymouth star linked with Hawthorns move
Albion are
linked with a £1.2million move for Plymouth midfielder Akos Buzsaky. News
of Bryan Robson's interest in the player first surfaced a few weeks ago
but with the transfer window now open, newspaper reports suggest the
Baggies' boss is set to make a move to sign him. The 23 year-old is also a
rumoured target for Albion's Premiership rivals West Ham United. The
Hungarian international moved to Home Park from FC Porto for £250,000 in
the summer of 2005.
